GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The Rhodes College field hockey team scored three goal in the first half and held off a rally from Gwynedd Mercy to pick up a 3-2 win on the road on Monday afternoon.
For the Lynx, it is their 10th win of the season as they move to 10-5 on the year and remain 4-1 in Southern Athletic Association play.
Rhodes would score the first goal of the game seven minutes into the contest as junior
Mackenzie Busby found senior
Alex Friedman across the box and finished for a 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, senior
Evy Royther would move the lead to 2-0 as junior
Erin Best made a great pass to the middle off of a corner.
With seven minutes remaining in the half, Busby moved the lead to 3-0 as she scored from the top of the arc to give the Lynx all of the momentum going into the break.
The Lynx were absolutely dominant throughout the first half, outshooting the Griffins 11-3 and holding an 8-4 advantage in corners.
The second half was a different story as Gwynedd Mercy made it a 3-2 game with goals midway through the second half. The Griffins held an 8-1 advantage in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corners.
Gwynedd Mercy pressed to equalize the game throughout the final 12 minutes, but the Lynx defense held strong to hang on for the huge victory.
For Royther, it was her 10th goals, for Friedman, her fifth, and for Busby, it was her fourth goal and third assist. For Best, it was her first assist of the season. Busby led the offensive attack with three shots while Royther added two. Sophomore
Laura Eckelkamp finished with eight saves on the afternoon and was huge for Rhodes defensively. Seniors
Jordan Kugler and
Katie Johnson were outstanding defensively all throughout the match as well.
The Lynx have won five of their last six matches and will prepare to return home for the first time in two weeks as they welcome in SAA-rival Sewanee for their first regular season home contest of the year. It will be Homecoming weekend across the campus of Rhodes. The match is set for a 10 a.m. start time.
