MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College volleyball team celebrated their four seniors,
Dani Plata,
Maraia Tremarelli,
Leah Washburn, and
Lauren Johnson, on Saturday afternoon and sent them out in their final home contest with a huge Southern Athletic Association win, defeating the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in a thrilling five set match. Rhodes would then fall to Austin College in three sets later that day.
Rhodes was outstanding offensively, hitting .207 with 67 kills, but did commit 3 errors in the match to keep Oglethorpe in the contest. The Stormy Petrels finished with 41 kills to only 14 errors and hit .167.
In the first set, Rhodes would jump all over the Petrels, running away with a 25-16 win. The Lynx finished with 16 kills and only committed five errors for a hitting percentage of .355. They were excellent defensively as well, holding Oglethorpe to four kills and three errors.
It was more of the same in the second set as Rhodes played one of its best sets offensively of the season, rolling to a 25-13 victory. They would finished with 18 kills in the set and only committed two errors while hitting a red hot .500.
The Stormy Petrels would not go down quietly though, winning two sets, 25-18 and 25-16. The Lynx helped out their opponents as their efficiency dipped in hitting, finishing with a combined 18 kills in the two sets to go with 18 errors.
It would set up a wild fifth set. Rhodes hit .222 in the final set to Oglethorpe's .182. The Lynx had 15 kills to go with five errors and would outlast the Stormy Petrels, 17-15, to pick up the huge victory for their seniors.
Freshman
Ellen Platt finished with a career-high 23 kills while freshman
August Bishop added 13 and sophomore
Elasha Williams had 11. Freshman
Ana McMullen was terrific as well with 39 assists while freshman
Arati Joshi had 12 assists.
Defensively, Tremarelli finished with 23 digs while McMullen added 16. Platt and freshman
Caroline Perlis each added a pair of blocks.
The Lynx would break from conference play following the match to take on the Austin College 'Roos. Rhodes could not slow down a hot hitting Ausitn College club, falling in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19.
Platt again led the way with 11 kills while McMullen had 25 assists. Tremarelli had 14 digs while Williams, Perlis, and fresman
Morgan Hill all had two blocks.
Rhodes moves to 10-15 overall and 3-9 in SAA play. Their home season comes to the close as they will play the remainder of the year on the road. The Lynx will travel to Centre on Saturday to battle Centre College. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m. CT.
