Volleyball Falls Short to Berry in Conference Action

MEMPHIS - The Rhodes College volleyball team returned home after spending the last couple of weeks on the road, welcoming in the Berry College Vikings. The Lynx would give Berry all they could handle for the second straight time, but this time, would fall short in four sets.

The Lynx fall to 9-14 overall and 2-9 in the Southern Athletic Association. They would have nice afternoon hitting, finishing with 47 kills, but would have 34 errors in the contest to finish with a .082 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, Berry had 48 kills to go with 19 errors for a hitting percentage of .204.

The Vikings would take the first set, 25-20, outhitting the Lynx .189 to .000. Berry would have 12 kills while Rhodes had 10. The Lynx would commit 10 errors in the set, which made the difference. At one point, Rhodes was down 19-11, but would rally by scoring nine seven of the next eight points to make it a 20-18 contest. However, Berry would finish strong, scoring the final three points to pick up the win.

Rhodes would battle back in set two, winning 25-21, as the Lynx finished with a set-high 15 kills. Rhodes would have nine errors in the set, but still hit .146 and was able to pull away and take the second set from the Vikings.

Despite a great set from the Lynx, as they finished with 14 kills to only six errors and a .200 hitting percentage, Rhodes would drop the third set, 25-19, as Berry was able to come through in key situations to pull away and take the 2-1 advantage.

Berry would carry that momentum over to the fourth set, dominating with a 25-14 win to take the road victory. Rhodes struggled, hitting -.029 with eight kills and nine errors.

Freshman Ellen Platt finished with 14 kills on the afternoon while sophomore Elasha Williams added eight and freshman Morgan Hill had seven. Freshman Ana McMullen would add 39 assists in the contest as well as two service aces.

Defensively, McMullen as well as senior Maraia Tremarelli each had 17 digs while Platt added 13. Hill would pick up five blocks while Platt and freshman Caroline Perlis each had two blocks as well. Perlis also had two service aces.

Rhodes is back in action tomorrow as they celebrate Senior Day, taking on Oglethorpe University at 11 a.m. followed by a non-conference matchup with Austin College at 2 p.m. Senior Day is set to begin before the Lynx's match with the Stormy Petrels.
