MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In a historic night contest, Rhodes College downed Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday, 46-22.
The Lynx, who lost to Wash U. a year ago in an overtime thriller, avenged themselves with the win and advance to 2-0 to begin the 2014 campaign. The Bears fall to 0-2 to begin 2014.
Rhodes opened up the scoring in the first quarter with a touchdown pass by
Blake Box to
Gerald Perry. Rhodes caught Wash U. off guard with the extra point making a two-point conversion when
Austin Henyon connected to
Tyler Cummings to make the count 8-0.
On the next position, linebacker
Michael Shield recovered a fumble and Box connected with wide receiver Jonathan Weiner for a 17-yard touchdown to take a 15-0 lead.
Box ended the first half going 10-14 with 184-yards and three touchdowns. In the first half
Roc Sherrell once again led the Lynx on the ground with 68-yards and two touchdowns. Receiver
Jonathan Wiener had four catches for 99-yards and a touchdown in the first half for Rhodes.
The Rhodes defense held strong in the opening half, forcing three 3-and-outs and four punts.
Trey Hooper led the Lynx with 13 first half tackles, and the Lynx held Washington University to under 200 yards total at the midway point.
Rhodes held Washington University to just three points in the first half, and took a 36-3 lead into the locker room at the break.
Washington University opened up the second half with a long touchdown drive to cut the Rhodes lead to 36-10. The Lynx responded to the Bears touchdown drive with a long drive of their own, with a 13-play, 61-yard drive that ended in a
Tucker Nichols field goal.
Washington University scored again on the next drive to make it 39-16, but Rhodes responded with yet another long drive, which ended with a 17-yard touchdown run by
Kevin Vieira, to extend the Rhodes lead to 46-16.
Both teams traded scoring drives in the fourth quarter, with Wash U. posting 12 points and Rhodes adding seven in the fourth quarter.
Rhodes finished out the game with a 46-22 victory, in which Box threw for 205-yards and three touchdowns. Vieira had 10 carries for 82-yards and a touchdown, while Weiner broke the century mark with 108 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The Lynx defense was led by
Trey Hooper, who had 15 tackles, and
Joseph Raby, who had 10 tackles including two for a loss. Rhodes held the highflying Bears offense to only 22 points.
Rhodes will be back in action next Saturday, Sept. 20 at Pamona Pitzer in California, with a 9 p.m. CST kickoff.
