CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Rhodes football team continued to roll, as they picked up their third straight win, over Pomona-Pitzer College on Saturday, 42-21.
The Lynx keep their record untarnished at 3-0 with the Sage Hens fall to 0-2 to start their campaign.
Rhodes got rolling early, picking up a quick seven points on their second possession. The Lynx 11 play, 76-yard drive was capped by a 17-yard pass from
Blake Box to
Nick Parinella.
Pomona-Pitzer matched the Lynx touchdown on the opening drive of the second quarter, but Rhodes wouldn't let the Sage Hens stick around for long. On the Lynx next possession, Box found another target,
Beau Egan, for his second touchdown throw of the night, and the 14-7 lead that would stand through the half.
In the opening drive of the second half, the Lynx again found the end zone, this time on the ground in the form of
Roc Sherrell. The sophomore finished a 60-yard drive for Rhodes, giving the Lynx a 21-7 advantage.
The Sage Hens were able to turn a Box interception into points, as they posted a 27-yard Bresler to Pietrykowski touchdown to make the count 21-14 to end the third quarter.
The Lynx offense wasn't done, as they matched their first three quarters of scoring in the final period of play. With three touchdowns, including a
Kevin Vieira 38-yard touchdown rush, a Box to Jonathan Weiner 48-yard pass completion, and a second Sherrell touchdown. The three scores, along with a Pomona-Pitzer TD made the final count 42-21.
Box had another sound night for the Lynx, where he threw for 215 yards, went 16-22, and three touchdown passes. Vieira led the way on the ground, rusing for 169 yards on the night, with one touchdown. Sherrell added 52 yards and picked up two TD's.
Weiner was Box's number one target, where he picked up 61 yards on three catches, including a touchdown catch. Egan also had three catches for 25 yards and a TD.
The defensive efforts were led by
Trey Hooper, who wracked up 11 tackles, eight solo and three assisted, including a tackle for loss.
Spencer Smith and
Joseph Raby each added eight tackles, with three solo and five assisted for Smith, including three tackles for loss. Raby's six solo tackles and two assisted also included three tackles for a loss of six yards, and one sack.
Rhodes will open conference play a week from Saturday on Oct. 4 in Rome, Ga. When the Lynx take on Berry College.
