DEMOREST, Ga. – In the NCAA South Regional, the Rhodes baseball used an explosive eighth inning to down Covenant College 5-3 to win their first ever post season NCAA contest.
The Lynx move on and improve their season record to 33-16 while the Scots finish their 2014 campaign with a record of 26-15.
The contest proved to be a pitcher's dual, but Covenant was able to break through and post the first run in the fourth inning after a double scored Perry Rigby. It wasn't until the seventh inning that the next run would score, where the Scots added two more runs.
The Lynx used a strategic eighth inning to get on the board and take the lead.
Patrick Kilkenny got things started when he singled to center field, scoring
Bill Munson. The Rhodes rally continued when
Strother White reached on an error, sending
Justin Genter home and pulling to 3-2.
The Lynx coaching staff used two left handed pinch hitters to score the next two runs, as Covenant walked in the next two Lynx runs. McWherter worked his way home off a wild pitch to make the score 5-3. Rhodes defense held strong and held on the its first NCAA post season win.
Adam Putnam started on the hill for the Lynx, throwing for a solid seven and one third innings. In his time on the mound, he struck out six batters, scattered three hits and only walked one batter.
Max Halasz came in to relieve in the eighth inning, throwing for one and two thirds innings, striking out one batter and working for the win.
Rhodes survived to play another game in 2014, matching up against the loser of the Emory University and Bridgewater College matchup. The Lynx will likely play at 7:30 on May 16, but the schedule could be altered due to weather.
