Rhodes overcome Oglethorpe in doubleheader

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rhodes baseball took down Oglethorpe University in a double header on Saturday, 5-1 and 12-1 in Southern Athletic Association play.
               
The Lynx improve to 10-4 on the season while the Stormy Petrels post a record of 6-8.
 
In the first game, the Stormy Petrels' only run came late in the top of the eighth inning when Andrew Wallis missed a fly ball, allowing the Stormy Petrels to score.
 
The Lynx's offense took off early in the game with three hits in the first inning alone. Bill Munson, Justin Genter and Strother White all reached on hits, and Brendan DePoy's fly ball out to center allowed Munson to score the Lynx's first run.
 
Again the bottom of the third, DePoy hit a double down the left field line which allowed White to score the second run for the Lynx. Patrick Kilkenny hit a single on the next at bat to left field, which sent home Brendan DePoy to score.
 
The final two runs came in the bottom of the fourth when Justin Genter hit a double down the left field line again allowing Josh Goodwin to score. Ryan Olive also chipped in a single down to center field, scoring Genter to post the Lynx's fifth run.
 
Blake Glauben took the mound for the first game, pitching seven innings and striking out seven batters while only giving up one hit. Phil Sartain tagged-in in the eighth, pitching the last two innings giving up one hit and one run. Glauben was credited for the win, putting him at 2-1 for the season.
 
In the second game, the Stormy Petrels' only run came in the top of the second inning when Frank Sarno hit a single out to right field.
 
The Lynx's offense really took off in the second game as they scored 12 runs in total. In the first inning, the Lynx scored three runs off singles from David Balaguer, Olive and White. They tacked on another run in the bottom of the second with a single from White to right field.
 
The fifth and sixth run came in the bottom of the third, while runs seven and eight came in the bottom of the eighth.
 
Rhodes ninth run came in the bottom of the 5th inning off an error, and the final three runs were scored in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Stormy Petrels allowed Zac Lange and Matt Scwartz to score. After a Nathan Foshee single out to left field, Bennett Notestine scored the Lynx's final run.
 
Dan Morris started for the Lynx, pitching six innings while only giving up two hits and one run. James Quattrocchi came in for Morris in the last inning, striking out one batter.
 
The Lynx had a whopping 17 hits while only giving up one error while the pitching staff held the Stormy Petrels to only two hits and four errors.
 
Rhodes will tangle with the Petrels tomorrow, March 9 in the final game of the series at 11 a.m.
