MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes lacrosse team needed overtime to top Millsaps College 14-13, using a
Tori Van Heyst goal to get the win on Saturday.
The Lynx improve to 6-3 on the year and 2-3 in league play while the Majors fall to 3-5 and 2-2 in Southern Athletic Association action.
The high scoring affair got started with back-to-back goals from Van Heyst to take the early 2-0 lead. Millsaps netted one goal from Whitney Smith before the Lynx added another score from the stick of
Lisle Bruns to pull ahead 3-1.
Millsaps scored four unanswered foals to reach their first lead of the contest.
Morgan Fuller halted the score streak with a score at the 10:04 mark to make the count 5-4. The Majors and Lynx traded several scores before Millsaps closed the half with two goals and took the 9-6 advantage into the half.
Rhodes opened the second half with a flurry of scoring, including two goals from
Allison Bruff and a goal apiece from
Emily Teague and Fuller to pull back the lead at 10-9. Again the two squads took turns trading goals when after a pair of Major scores, the Lynx found themselves trailing 13-12.
Undeterred by the deficit, the Lynx fought for a goal, and Fuller found the back of the net with just four seconds to play in regulation, ultimately forcing overtime. The Lynx defense held strong in the extra period, and after several shot attempts, Rhodes' Van Heyst found the back of the net for the game winner, earning her fourth hat trick of the season.
The Lynx outshot its opponent by a margin of 32-25. The Majors picked up more ground balls by a count of 9-7 and also won more draw controls by a tally of 17-14.
Sarah Daniels got credit for the win, earning all 60 minutes in goal. Daniels grabbed eight saves in the win.
The Lynx will be back in action on April 5 as they host Oglethorpe University in their final home game. Rhodes will honor the senior members of the team in a ceremony held prior to the contest.
