LAKELAND, Fla. – Rhodes baseball opened its spring break trip with a statement win over the No. 22 ranked Bridgewater College, 9-4 on Tuesday.
The Lynx improve to 12-4 on the season while the Eagles fall to a 9-5 start.
Rhodes got on the board early, when Strother While singles to left field, sending
Bill Munson in for the Lynx' first run. Bridgewater evened things up in the next half inning, scoring Ryan Fitzgerald on a Brendan Howell single to right field.
The Lynx took the lead again in the third inning when
Justin Genter singled to the outfield, and sent Munson home for the second time. The Eagles again answered in the bottom of the third to tie things up at 2-2 all.
Rhodes' offense continued to thrive, with more runs coming in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Lynx got the go ahead run on an Eagles error that scored White, and on the next at bat,
Josh Goodwin batted in
Brendan DePoy to give the Lynx the 4-2 edge.
The Lynx tacked on another run in the fifth inning when like déjà vu, White singled to left field, scoring Munson for his third trip home one the day. Rhodes added two more runs in the sixth with a
Josh Keen hit by pitch that scored
Patrick Kilkenny, and a Munson walk that scored
Walker McWherter.
Bridgewater's sixth inning rally fell short, but not before then added two runs to pull within three at 7-4.
Rhodes put an exclamation point on the win, adding their final runs in the ninth inning when
Andrew Wallis singled to right field, scoring Kilkenny and
Jordan Infield. Rhodes posted a 9-4 win over the Eagles.
The Lynx got a boost from
Bill Munson, who went three for three from the plate, with two walks and four stolen bases.
"Munson stepped it up today," said head coach
Jeff Cleanthes. "He was a terror on the base path and it really paid off for us, beating one of the top teams in the nation."
Thomas Beamish got the start and the win for the Lynx, throwing five and a third inning. In his time on the rubber, Beamish threw for six K's and only three walks.
Rhodes will be back in action tomorrow, when they take on Rockford University in Auburndale, Fla. at 3 p.m.
