MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rhodes baseball fell in extra innings to conference foes Hendrix College, 13-9 on Friday in Southern Athletic Association action.
The loss is the Lynx first at home, and moved them to 6-3 on the season and 0-1 to start league play, while the Warriors advance to 4-5 and begin conference play at 1-0.
Rhodes got on the board early, scoring three runs in the opening inning, with a
Patrick Kilkenny single that scored
Justin Genter, a
Andrew Wallis single that scored
Walker McWherter, and a
Ryan Olive three run homer that score Wallis and Kilkenny, to open the game 5-0.
Hendrix got their bats going as a Wyatt Hogan homerun with bases loaded made the count 4-5 in the second inning. The Warriors tied it up at 5-5 in the fourth inning as Logan Hiatt earned an RBI scoring Matt Simmons. Hendrix took the lead in the next inning when Collin Radack made it home off a Thomas Weber sacrifice fly to left field, making the count 6-5.
Rhodes posted a two run seventh inning to regain the lead, 7-6 after a pair of runs scored on Hendrix errors. In the bottom of the next inning, the Lynx worked from some cushion, when a White single scored
Bill Munson and
Josh Keen.
The Lynx couldn't close the door, as the Warriors scored two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 9-9 and, after an unproductive bottom of the ninth for the Lynx, force extra innings.
It took three more innings to declare a winner, when Hendrix got a man across home plate in inning 12. A Radack single sent home the deciding run, before the Warriors tacked on two more scores to make the final count, 13-9.
Rhodes'
Adam Putnam started the game on the mound for the Lynx, throwing four strike outs and giving up four hits in five innings.
Thomas Beamish came in to relive in the sixth inning, throwing for three innings, while striking out one batter and giving up zero hits.
Max Halasz threw the next three and a third innings, throwing two K's and allowing four hits. Kilkenny came in to close for Rhodes, and in his two thirds innings thrown, he earned the loss on the outing.
Nick Land was credited with the win as he pitched the Warriors final five innings, while striking out eight and only allowing three hits.
The Lynx will face off against Hendrix tomorrow, March 1 in double header action. The first pitch is set to be thrown out at 11 a.m.
