ROME, Ga. – Rhodes women's lacrosse drops its first ever contest in a close battle with Berry College, 9-7 on Saturday in Southern Athletic Association play.
The Lynx post a 0-1 record on the young season, while the Vikings move to 1-0 to begin their 2014 campaign.
Rhodes netted two first half goals behind the sticks of
Ashley Dill and
Morgan Fuller and had a lead of 2-1 with 15:44 to play in the first half. The Lynx couldn't hold on to the lead as Berry scored three straight to end the first half, and take a 4-2 lead into the halftime break.
Rhodes stayed even with the Vikings in the second half, with each team scoring five goals apiece. Rhodes'
Tori Van Heyst scored the opening goal two goals, followed by another Dill score to make it 6-5, Berry. The Vikings scored three unanswered goals over the next ten minutes of play to go up 9-5. The Lynx posted the final two scorers, a pair of goals from
Morgan Fuller to make the final count 9-7.
Sarah Daniels was the net minder for the Lynx, as she earned 12 saves in all 90 minutes of play.
The Lynx were outshot by the Vikings by a count of 25-18, and were close in ground balls as well, with the Lynx picking up seven to Berrys eight ground balls. Rhodes did come out on top in draw controls, winning 10 of eight battles.
The Lynx will look to bounce back tomorrow, Sunday Feb. 16 as they travel to LaGrange College to take on the Panthers at 12 p.m.
