Rhodes tops LeMoyne-Owen College in double header

MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Rhodes baseball went 2-0 against cross town rivals LeMoyne-Owen College on Saturday, defeating the Magicians 6-5 and 5-1.
 
Rhodes improves to 3-2 on the season while LeMoyne-Owen starts their 2014 campaign with a 0-2 start.
 
In the first game, the Magicians scored the first run of the game in the first inning and added four more in the fifth.
 
The Lynx offense saw their first run score in the bottom of the fourth inning when Josh Goodwin hit a single to center field and Andrew Wallis came in to tie the game up at 1-1.
 
After the Magicians took the lead, the Lynx responded with a strong fifth inning and scored three runs in a row to tie the game up 5-5, one of which was a double by Bill Munson scoring Walker McWherter.
 
Justin Genter scored the winning run when Strother White was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Lynx a 6-5 victory over the Magicians.
 
Rhodes pitcher Blake Glauben took the mound in the first game, pitching five innings, giving up six hits and five runs. Glauben struck out a whopping nine batters and walked one batter.
 
It was Thomas Beamish who got credit for the win as he closed out the game, pitching the final two innings. Beamish struck out two batters while not giving up any runs.
 
Adam Putnam was on the hill for the Lynx in the second contest, earning the 5-1 win. Putnam threw for five innings, striking out eight batters while only giving up three hits.
 
Rhodes posted 10 hits against the Magicians, including two apiece from Justin Genter, McWherter and White. Rhodes waited until the fifth inning to get on the board, but made it count. The Lynx scored all five of their runs in the fifth, with a Bill Munson triple to start things off, scoring Jordan Infield. On the next at bat, a Genter single scored Munson, giving the Lynx a 2-0 advantage. A white double on the next at bat, scored two, and an Ryan Olive sacrifice fly scored the Lynx final run.
 
The Magicians ended the Rhodes shutout in the sixth inning when Jorrell Johnson hit a one-run homer.
 
Rhodes will be back in action next weekend, Feb. 22 when they host Wartburg College and Washington University in St. Louis in a tri-match.
