Selner hat-trick leads Lynx to SAA Championships, downing Sewanee, 3-0

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Rhodes women's soccer team advanced to the championship round of the Southern Athletic Association Conference Tournament, defeating Sewanee in the semifinal round, 3-0.

The Lynx advance to the tournament championship game to face Centre College, who downed Berry College 2-1 in their semi-final contest. Rhodes keeps rolling with a 11-4-2 record in 2014 while Sewanee finishes the season at 13-6.

The semi-final round of the SAA tournament proved to be a tough battle, as neither team could net a goal in the first half. The Lynx defense held strong, limiting the Tigers to only four shots in the period.

In the second half the Lynx offense broke the contest open when Hannah Selner scored her first goal in the 47th minute off a setup from her sister, Emma Selner to give the Lynx a 1-0 lead. At the 60 minute mark, H. Selner found the back of the net again, this time unassisted to give Rhodes a 2-0 advantage.

Just four minutes later, H. Selner notched her third goal of the contest, burying a Shannon Donelson pass to give Rhodes an insurance goal, and the 3-0 lead. The Lynx defense was dominant, holding Sewanee to just one second half shot.

Rhodes net minder Anna Maldonando got the start and all 90 minutes in goal for the Lynx, grabbing three saves in the outing.

The Lynx outworked their counterparts, with 12 shots to the Tigers six, and picked up more corner kick attempts at 8-3.

The Lynx advance to the Championship round of the SAA Conference Tournament against the No. 4 seed, Centre College. That match up will take place on the campus of Centre in Davnille, Ky. on Nov. 9 at 11 a.m.
