Rhodes drops tight contest to Chicago, 17-14

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Rhodes football team fell in tough fight to the University of Chicago on Saturday, 17-14.

The Lynx are fall to 4-1 on the season while the Maroons are now 4-0 on the year.

Rhodes won the toss and differed to the second half, kicking the game off in the first wet and cold contest the Lynx have seen this year.

After forcing a Chicago punt on their first possession, the Lynx looked promising on their first offensive outing as Blake Box found Nick Parinella for a 17-yard pick up and a first down. On the next play, the Lynx fumbled and couldn't recover, turning the ball over at the Rhodes 47-yard line.

The Maroons turned the Lynx turnover into points, converting a touchdown after a four play, 50 yard drive. The Chicago extra point was no good, and the Maroons took the first lead of the game at 6-0 with 8:22 to play in the quarter.

Both teams exchanged drives, but the Lynx were not able to capitalize in the wet conditions, and they went into the halftime break trailing the Maroons, 6-0.

In the first half, the Lynx posted six first downs, and Box completed 11 of 15 attempts, for 88 yards. Rhodes couldn't get much going on the ground in the first half, as they only picked up 19 rushing yards on 15 carries. The time of possession was pretty even, as Rhodes possessed the ball for 15:47, with Chicago's time of possession at 14:13.

The Lynx opened the second half with possession, and after a promising 12 play, 57-yard drive, Box was intercepted by Hayden Harrow at the UC one yard line. On the subsequent drive, Chicago coughed up the ball, on the UC one yard line, and Michael Shield recovered the ball for the touchdown. After the Tucker Nichols extra point, the Lynx took their first lead of 7-6 with 9:07 to play in the third quarter.

After the Lynx got the offensive wheels going, the defense forced a timely three-and-out. On the next drive, the Rhodes offense got to work, turning an 11 play, 74 yard drive into seven more points. Box, who went 4-4 on the drive, found Roc Sherrell for the two yard touchdown at the 14:55 mark of the fourth quarter. The Nichols point after gave the Lynx a 14-6 lead over UC.

On the following drive the Maroons missed a scoring opportunity, as they worked down to the Rhodes 20 yard line, but missed a field goal attempt with 12:44 to play in the contest. The Maroons continued to charge, as Ryan Patrick made three huge plays, including a 39 completion, a 17-yard pick up and an 11-yard connection to Sam Coleman for the UC TD. The Maroons made the two-point conversion and knotted the contest up at 14-14 with 4:11 to play in the contest.

On the succeeding Rhodes drive, the Lynx were picked off with 3:22 to play. The Maroons answered, driving to the Rhodes six yard line. With 12 seconds in the contest Chicago connected on their first kick of the day for the field goal, pulled ahead 17-14. The 12 seconds wasn't enough for the Lynx offense to post points as Rhodes fell 17-14.

Rhodes ended the contest with 168 passing yards, and picked up 116 yards on the ground. Box went 17-27 on the day, throwing for 168 yards. Kevin Vieira led the rush, with 101 yards and Parinella was the number one target, where he picked up 80 yards on eight receptions.

The Lynx will look to bounce back on Oct. 11 against rival, the University of the South for Rhodes College homecoming.
