Rhodes smothers Sewanee, 40-22

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes football team stuffed Sewanee and secured the Orgill Trophy for another year as the Lynx brought home a homecoming victory, 40-22.
 
Rhodes improves to 5-1 on the year and 2-0 in Southern Athletic Association play, while the Tigers fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in league action.
 
After the Tigers won the toss and opted to receive, the Lynx defense went to work, forcing a punt after a nine play, 32-yard drive by Sewanee. The Lynx took advantage and Blake Box found wide receiver Jonathan Wiener for a 14-yard touchdown pass. The Tucker Nichols point after attempt was good, and the Lynx took a 7-0 opening lead.
 
After each team traded a pair of drives, it was the Tigers who found the endzone next after a Cody Daniels one-yard rushing touchdown paired with a Callum Wishart field goal made the count 7-7.
 
The Lynx offense got to work in the second quarter, posting two separate Roc Sherrell touchdown runs. The first came at the 6:28 mark when Sherrell capped of an 11 play, 83-yard drive with a one-yard rush. On the successive Sewanee drive, Rhodes Spencer Smith forced a fumble, recovered by Joseph Raby at the Sewanee 34 yard line with 5:14 to play in the half.
 
Sherrell turned the Tigers slip up into points as he rushed for his second TD of the day, a four-yard rush to make the count 20-7 with 3:27 to play in the half. Sewanee snuck in another score before the end of the half when Cody Daniel connected with Stephen Jackson for a 16-yard touchdown pass. The Lynx worked to block the extra point, and took a 20-13 lead into the half time break.
 
The Rhodes offense had an electric start to the second half finding the endzone in just 2:12 of possession. Sherrell added a third touchdown to his game resume, with another one-yard rush for a TD. The Tigers blocked the extra point and returned the ball 98 yards for a two-point pick up, posting a score of 26-15.
 
The Rhodes offense continued to produce, picking up another TD after Box connected with Nick Parinella on an 11-yard pass for a TD, grabbing the 33-15 lead with 3:15 left to play in the third quarter.
 
Sewanee opened the fourth period with a TD, pulling to 33-22. But the Lynx had an answer, when Mike Edel caught a 14-yard TD pass, Box's third TD of the day, to give Rhodes the 40-22 advantage.
 
The Lynx defense held strong and the Lynx brought home the Orgill Trophy and the 40-22 win.
 
Box led the Lynx, throwing 14-18 for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Mason Childers was his number one target, with 41 yards on two catches. Edel, Parinella and Wiener each had a TD catch on the day.
 
On the ground, the Lynx were anchored by Sherrell who picked up 110 yards on 20 attepmts. Box rushed for 32 yards with Kevin Vieira adding 20 yards on five carries.
 
The Rhodes defense was stout, with Joseph Raby leading the way with 15 tackle, including one solo tackle and one broken up pass. Grady Kable added 13 tackles, with three solo, and one tackle for loss. Spencer Smith, Trey Hooper and Justin Toliver all came up big with 11 tackles. Smith had three sacks and two tackles for loss and also added a forced fumble in the outing.
 
The Lynx will enjoy a bye week, but will be back in action on the road as Rhodes travels to Centre College in Danville, Ky. for a 1:30 p.m. kick off on Oct. 25.
