Game Recap: Football |

Rhodes falls to Centre, 47-35

DANVILLE, Ky. – In a hard fought game in Danville, Ky., the Lynx fell to the Centre Colonels 47-35.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the Lynx failed to mount a drive on the opening possession and Centre obtained excellent field position at the Rhodes 30. It took the Colonels five plays to gain a seven-point lead, as Casey Bradley piled in from seven yards out for the game's first score.

The Lynx drove 74 yards on their next possession, only to come up short on a missed 23-yard field goal attempt on fourth-and-goal.  But the Lynx managed to stop Haden on fourth-and-11 at the Rhodes' 30 shortly thereafter.  Rhodes got on the board at the 3:38 mark of the first quarter with a brilliant 57-yard touchdown pass from Blake Box to Jonathan Wiener, the longest pass play of the season.  The teams exchanged punts over the next three possessions, rolling into the second quarter with a 7-7 tie.

Rhodes took the upper hand early in a back-and-forth second period with another deep ball, this time as Nick Parinella halled in a 43-yard pass in traffic from Box.  Haden and the Colonels answered right back with a 10-play, 63-yard drive, capped by a five-yard Haden scamper to close within one point.  Preston Cahill's extra point kick glanced off the left upright, leaving Centre at a 14-13 deficit.  Rhodes used a 55-yard kickoff return from Roc Sherrell to spur their next score, a 17-yard catch by Wiener to go up 21-13.

The Colonels struck for the first two touchdowns of the second half as Haden rushed for touchdowns of 10 and three yards to put Centre ahead 26-21 at the end of the third quarter.

On their first drive of the fourth quarter, Roc Sherrell ignited the Lynx with a 41-yard catch-and-run on third-and-seven from their own 33. Two plays later, Sherrell lined up at quarterback and took a direct snap around the right side for another 12 yards, setting up a 14-yard touchdown pass from Box to Mason Windatt to give the Lynx a 28-26 lead.

Centre responded with a 79-yard touchdown drive to take a 34-28 lead. On the ensuing possession, the Lynx moved the ball well into Centre territory, but on second-and-20 from the Colonels' 37, a shovel pass intended for Sherrell was intercepted by Centre defensive lineman Kris Beauchamp, who rumbled 36 yards the other way before being chased down by Box.

Three plays later, Nolan Coulter plunged in from one yard out to stretch the Colonels' lead to 40-28 with 5:14 to play.  Undeterred, Box went 4-of-7 through the air on the following drive en route to an 11-yard touchdown run to pull within five at the 3:35 mark.

Box threw for 408 yards and four touchdowns with one interception on 41 pass attempts, and Wiener was the favored target, catching nine balls for 129 yards and two scores.

Vieira led the running backs with 46 yards gained on nine carries.  Rhodes outgained Centre in total offense, 542 yards to 508 yards.

The Lynx drop to 5-2 (2-1) on the year with the defeat. Their next game is Nov. 1 at Crain Field against Birmingham-Southern College.
