Rhodes scorches Hendrix, 86-62

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes' Men's basketball team used sharp shooting to down Hendrix College, 86-62 on Saturday in Southern Athletic Association action.
 
With the win, The Lynx move to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in league action, while the Warriors fall to 7-8 on the season and 1-3 in the SAA.
 
Ryan Van Hoeck won the tip off to start the game, but the Lynx failed to get on the board with their first possession. The Lynx made up for it with solid defense led by Drew Miller who snagged an early steal. Three point baskets by Drew Miller and John Dunavant added to a pair of lay-ins from Dunavant and Geoff Livsey gave the Lynx a 5-0 run and a lead of 12-4 with 16:25 to play.
 
Wild passes and turnover calls plagued the Warriors in the first half. This, along with strong three-point shooting from John Dunavant and Michael Gallagher helped Rhodes to extend their lead to their largest margin of 14 with 5:14 to play, at 36-22. Fouls and turnovers by the Lynx allowed the Warriors to get into a small rhythm offensively toward the end of the half as Hendrix went on a 7-2 run behind a three from Drew Nikolovski and reduced the deficit to 38-29 with 2:55 to play in the half. Nevertheless, a strong defensive effort and an offense led by senior Dunavant gave the Lynx a 45-32 lead at the end of the first half.
 
Dunavant was the scoring leader at the half for both teams with his 12 points. Other standouts in the half were Patrick McGrail who went 3-4 from the field giving the Lynx nine points, Luke Collins who had five assists, and Matt Wagner who had six rebounds to help give the Lynx their lead. The Warriors were led by Nikolovski who netted eight first half points.
 
Both teams put up a high shooting percentage from the field in the first half, with the Warriors shooting 50.0 percent and the Lynx firing 55.2 percent. Rhodes thrived from beyond the three point line, hitting 55.6 of its three point attempts. Rhodes outworked Hendrix in the paint, scoring 20 points in the paint. The Lynx also capitalized on the Warriors 13 first half turnovers, scoring 14 points off turnovers.
 
The Warriors got first possession in the second half and scored quickly, but Luke Collins was quick to responds with an easy layup to make the count 47-34 with 19:24 to play. Luke Collins continued to impress by finding open players and hitting a three point basket at the 12:40 mark to give the Lynx a 62-45 lead. Again, the Lynx defense led by Drew Miller who had four steals on the night forced turnovers and offensive fouls by the Warriors.
 
Overall, the Lynx dominated the second half outscoring the Warriors 41 to 30 by shooting 53.6 percent from the field. Rhodes shot a staggering 50.0 percent beyond the three point line while holding the Warriors to shooting only 29.4 percent.
 
The Warriors top performers were Luke Vance and Colton Primm with 10 points apiece. Nikolovski added eight points to Hendrix' total.
 
Dunavant and Miller lead the Lynx offensively scoring 16 points apiece. Livsey and Collins also scored in the double digits with 13 and 10 respectively. Collins also led the Lynx with six assists, Matt Wagner added seven rebounds on the night.
 
The Lynx will hit the road for the first time in ten games as they travel to Jackson, Miss. to face off against Millsaps College on Friday Jan. 24 at 8 p.m.
