Rhodes cruises to 52-45 win over Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – Rhodes men's basketball posted another strong win Saturday in Southern Athletic Association play over Millsaps College, 52-45.
 
The Lynx advance to 4-1 in the SAA with the victory and 11-5 overall, while Millsaps falls to 0-5 in conference play and 3-11 on the season.
 
The Lynx got off to a smooth start with back to back baskets from Ryan Van Hoeck to give Rhodes a 4-0 advantage. The Majors answered with a three and a jumper from Ryan Berger, and jumped to a 5-4 lead at the 17:45 mark. The score would flip flop a couple more times before the Lynx grabbed the ultimate lead at 13:59 with a lay-in from Geoff Livsey.
 
The scoring was even matched in the first half, with both teams producing at similar paces. Rhodes closed the half with a three pointer from Johnny Dunavant and a pair of free throws from Shane Watson to make the half time count 24-18.
 
Rhodes' charge was led by Livsey, who netted seven first half points, followed by Dunavant and Van Hoeck, who each added seven. The Lynx shot 39.1 percent from the field in the first half, with 36.4 percent accuracy from beyond the three point arc.
 
Millsaps was led by Berger who had nine points in the opening period, with Tully Gilligan adding four points. The Majors posted a percentage of 25.0 percent shooting, and the Lynx held their opponent to just 12.5 percent shooting from three point land.
 
The even match paced scoring continued in the second half for both squads. A Livsey layup, followed by a pair of Michael Gallagher free throws gave the Lynx a 30-25 lead with 12:54 to play. The Lynx continued to have an answer for every Millsaps attack, and continued to outpace the Majors. At the 4:58 mark, the Lynx pair of Dunavant and Livsey posted a layup and three respectively, to post a 42-38 lead. Rhodes grabbed its largest margin closing out the contest, and posted a 50-43 score with 17 seconds to play. Coach DeGeorge's squad finished with a pair of Luke Collins free throws for a final score of 52-45.
 
Berger finished as the top scorer for the Majors, with his 16 points. Marc Robertson contributed nine, and Gilligan added eight to the Millsaps total.
 
Collins and Livsey led the balanced attack for the Lynx, with 12 points each, with this being the first game that Collins has been the team's leading scorer all season. Collins and Livsey each also had four rebounds apiece. Dunavant was a point off the leaders with his 11 point performance.
 
The Lynx put up 43.6 percent shooting in the contest, with an above average 38.9 percent from beyond the three point arc. The Lynx held their opponents to just 34.1 percent shooting from the field and a mere 14.3 percent from three point range.
 
The Lynx will close out their road trip this Sunday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. when the face off against Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Ala.
