CONWAY, Ark. – A hat trick from Mackenzie Busby helped lift Rhodes field hockey over Hendrix College 9-1 on Saturday in Southern Athletic Association action.
The win takes the Lynx to 2-5 and 2-1 in SAA play, while Hendrix falls to 0-5 and 0-3 in conference.
Rhodes had a host of players contribute in the scoring column, but the first three goals came from the stick of freshmen Busby as she earned her first collegiate hat trick. Busby scored the first Rhodes goal under five minutes into play, when she finished the ball off a rebound. Her second and third goals came within five minutes of one another, at the 22 and 26 minute marks.
The Lynx would connect one more time in the first half when Christina DeFelice found the cage in the final 25 seconds of the half, making the score 4-0 at the half.
Rhodes continued its dominance in the second half scoring the five goals unanswered. Kate Taylor connected off a rebound in the 37th minute to take the Lynx lead to 5-0. Kat Simpson earned her first goal at the 40 minute mark, with scores from Evy Royther and Simpson coming in one minute intervals following. The final Rhodes score came from the stick of Meaghan Fogarty in the 47th minute. Rhodes allowed one goal in the 52nd minute from Morgan Fires, making the final count 9-1.
Two keepers saw time for the Lynx, with Kelly Whelan earning 35 minutes and one save in the first half. Erin Bailey picked up 35 minutes in the second half and snagged two saves.
Rhodes controlled the offensive end, taking more shots by a margin of 43-6. The Lynx also won more corner opportunities, taking 16-4.
Rhodes will stay on the road, traveling to Sewanee to take on The University of the South on Sept. 28 at 11 a.m.
