Rhodes falls short to No. 9 Christopher Newport University. 6-2

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rhodes College field hockey fell to No. 9 Christopher Newport University 6-2 on Sunday in the final match of the St. Jude Classic.
 
The loss puts the lynx at 0-2 on the early season while CNU moves to 2-0
 
The match proved to be a tough physical battle for the Lynx. CNU drew first blood at the 9 minute mark as Taylor Young connected off a rebound in a corner attempt and finished in the bottom right of the goal. The Captains scored their second goal in the next minute when Belle Tunstall finished a breakaway in the bottom right corner of the goal.
 
Rhodes would make the score 2-1 before the end of the half when Evy Royther found the back of the net in the 15th minute.
 
CNU opened the second half with two consecutive scores from the sticks of Lauren Cheatham and Marlene Lichty in the 45th and 49th minutes respectively. Rhodes answered as Kat Simpson broke away from the pack and beat the Captains goal keeper one on one to finish in the left corner. CNU tallied two more goals from Young and Cheatham to make the final score 6-2.
 
The Lynx were out shot by a margin of 30-13 and took fewer corners by a tally of 10-4.
 
Kelly Whelan tallied a total of 15 saves while Shauni Cowan snagged a defensive save.
 
The Lynx will be back in action on Sept. 7 when they travel to Bridgewater College to take on the Eagles at1 p.m.
