Rhodes field hockey battles to the end with Bellarmine, falling 4-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Rhodes field hockey dropped a close match to Division II Bellarmine University on Sunday, 4-3 to close out the Lynx regular season.

Rhodes record falls to 10-8 for the 2013 season while the Knights move to 8-9 on the year.

Rhodes stuck with Bellarmine throughout the duration of the match, but fell just short of the NCAA Division II squad. The Lynx got on the board first when Julie Hertzman scored on an assist from Evy Royther at the five minute mark. Rhodes scored its second goal in the 29th minute when Mackenzie Busby converted a Mary Rose Hazel set up off a penalty corner. The Lynx would take their 2-0 lead into the halftime break.

Rhodes saw the Knights come out of the halftime break and score three unanswered goals. Rachael McAllister scored in the 40th minute, and Alexis VanWallaghen scored just a minute later to tie the score at 2-2. Bellarmine's Alex Ojeda scored at the 49 minute mark and gave the Knights their first lead. The Lynx' Christina DiFelice knotted things up once again at 3-3 at the 66 minute mark when she found the back of the cage off a Busby pass. Bellarmine would tab the final goal in the final 23 seconds as Meghan Williams scored unassisted to hand the Lynx the 4-3 loss.

Rhodes goal keeper Kelly Whelan saw all 70 minutes in the contest, and grabbed six saves while in the net for the Lynx.

Rhodes outshot the Knights by a margin of 18-13 and were awarded more corner attempts than their Division II counterparts, 14-7.

Rhodes will look forward to the Southern Athletic Association conference tournament where they will face Sewanee in the first round of play on Nov. 9 at host Centre College at 2:30 p.m.
