TYLER, Texas – Rhodes women's basketball comes up with its first road win as they defeat the University of Texas at Tyler on Friday, 80-70.
Rhodes advances to 3-0 on the season while the Patriots fall to 1-1 in 2013.
The contest was a tight battle with seven total lead changes. Rhodes found itself trailing in the first half by four points, and struggled to overcome the gap until the waning minutes of the first half when a layup by
Lauren Avant got the Lynx their first lead in over ten minutes.
Rhodes extended their lead to four after a pair of Avant free throws at the 3:43 mark. The Patriots charged back with an 8-2 run, pulling to a 34-31 lead after a She'Cara Humphrey layup with 50 seconds left in the first half. The Lynx charged back with a pair of Avant jumpers to take a 36-35 lead into the half.
Rhodes took control in the second half, pulling away to a 12 point lead in the opening three minutes, fueled by a pair of
Dy'nelle Todman three pointers. Rhodes reached their largest lead of the game after a
Symone Daniels made three with 5:28 left in the contest to give Rhodes a 76-61 advantage. The Lynx held strong, ultimatley winning a tough contest, 80-70.
"This win is one of the best road wins we have had during my tenure," said head coach
Matt Dean. "Tyler won 18 games last season and brought everyone back. We just beat a really good team."
The Patriots She'Cara Humphrey turned in 26 points in the contest, while grabbing seven rebounds. Brittany King also added 14 points for UT Tyler.
Rhodes was led in scoring by its senior, Avant, who tallied 32 points. Avant also grabbed six rebounds, four steals and one assist. Daniels added 17 points and four rebounds to the Lynx total, with Todmam scoring 16 points and pulling in three rebounds and two blocks.
Rhodes will continue their road trip Saturday, Nov. 23 as they face off against LeTourneau University at 1 p.m.
