LONGVIEW, Texas – Rhodes women's basketball completes a road trip sweep as they rushed pat LeTourneau University on Saturday, 55-38.
Rhodes keeps an unblemished record of 4-0, while the Yellow Jackets get their first loss of the 2013 season, falling to 2-1.
The Lynx opened the contest struggling to put points on the board. Rhodes remained scoreless the first five minutes of the game until
Dy'nelle Todman was able to score the Lynx' first basket on a layup to make the score 7-2 at the 15:32 mark. The scoring struggle continued as Rhodes didn't add points to its total until three minutes later when
Lauren Avant converted a pair of free throws, making the count 9-4.
The offense began to ignite, as the Lynx tied the score at 14-14 with 8:17 to play in the opening half after a
Sarah Johnson lay-in and a pair of free throws for Avant. Rhodes took its first lead at the 7:45 mark when
Symone Daniels made a free throw. The Lynx would not relinquish their lead for the remainder of the contest. Rhodes offense continued to work, as the Lynx took a 32-20 lead into the half after Johnson connected from the field.
The low-scoring affair continued in the second half, but the Lynx maintained a handle on the contest holding LeTourneau to 18 second half points. Rhodes pulled away, finishing the game with their largest lead of 17 points, 55-38.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Julencia Curtis, who finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Shi'rrell Williams also added eight points, while pulling in four rebounds and an assist.
Rhodes offensive leader was Avant, who scored 23 points. Avant also snagged five rebounds, four steals and two assists in the outing. Johnson and Todman each added eight points apiece, while Todman grabbed three rebounds, and Johnson added two rebounds, seven steals, three assists and two blocked shots. Daniels finished the game with 10 rebounds for the Lynx, as well as four points, and two steals.
Rhodes will be back in action on Dec. 4 as they travel to Conway, Ark. to take on the Warriors of Hendrix at 6 p.m.
