Rhodes field hockey claims fifth straight Conference title

DANVILLE, Ky. – Rhodes field hockey upset the No. 1 seeded Centre Colonels for the SAA Tournament title on Sunday to earn its fifth straight conference title.

The win gives the Lynx an overall record of 12-8 while the Colonels likely end their season with a 15-4 record.

Rhodes controlled the game in its entirety, scoring in the first 46 seconds of the game. Julie Hertzman found the back of the cage with a set-up pass from Evy Royther to give the Lynx the early 1-0 lead. Just five minutes later Rhodes' Kate Taylor buried a Christina DiFelice pass to give Rhodes the 2-0 lead they would never relinquish. The Lynx defense held up, and held on to the conference tournament winning streak, giving Rhodes its fifth straight title.

The Lynx goal keeper Kelly Whelan had a monster outing in the shutout, making 10 saves in her 70 minutes of play.

Rhodes outshot the Colonels for the championship 13-11, while the host Centre had more corner opportunities by a count of 10-6.

The SAA is in its second year and therefore the Southern Athletic Association does not receive an automatic-qualifying bid to the dance. The Division III bracket will be released Nov. 10 with the first round of play beginning on Nov. 13.
