Rhodes football uses special teams to overcome the University of Chicago, 41-34

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Rhodes football overpowers the University of Chicago 41-34 in Division III action on Saturday

The Lynx move to a solid 4-1 record on the 2013 season, while the Maroons earn their first loss on the season, falling to 4-1.

Rhodes scored more points against Chicago than all of the Maroons opponents combined to date. The high scoring affair saw several blocked punts from the Lynx, who was powered by their special teams.

Rhodes got off on the right foot as Brandon Williams began the day with a 27 yard return.  The Lynx' offense found an early first down completion between Blake Box and Jonathan Wiener. However, an interception by the Maroon defense quickly put the Lynx offense on halt.

The Lynx defense responded led by the efforts of Mike Olushoga and Walker McWherter tackling the Maroon offense for a loss of yards on their first drive. Rhodes got on the scoreboard first with a blocked punt by Brandon Williams, who recovered the ball for a touchdown. After a blocked extra point attempt, the Lynx snagged the early lead over the Maroons 6-0.

The maroons found themselves in field goal range after a late first quarter charge, and opened the second period with a three point attempt. Rhodes was charged with roughing the kicker, giving the Maroons a free set of downs inside the Rhodes 10 yard line. On the following play, Vincent Cortina's pass to John Gormley in the end zone was complete for a touchdown. The Maroons also missed their extra point, putting the score even at 6-6 at 14:42 in the second quarter.

The Maroons passing game gave the Lynx secondary problems in the first half. A 35 yard completion from Vincent Cortina to Sam Coleman in the end zone put the Maroons over the Lynx 13-6 after the extra point.

On the following kick off, a monster 72 yard return by Brandon Williams was overturned by a holding penalty by the Lynx. The penalty would cost the Lynx later on in the drive when Blake Box's pass intended for Mason Windatt was overthrown, forcing a turnover on downs.

Olushoga again led the defense on the following series by sacking the QB, forcing the Maroons to punt.

Rhodes took over at the Maroon 7 yard line after a bobbled snap and tackle by Matt Nungesser. A completion from Blake Box to Jonathan Wiener for a 5 yard touchdown tied the game up at 13-13 after the extra point with 0:51 left in the first half. After a fruitless drive by the Maroons, the score would remain knotted at 13-13 to end the half.

Rhodes started off the second half with a 31 yard statement pass from Box to Wiener for a Lynx first down. Kevin Vieira followed the completion with two consecutive rushes, the second of which led to a Lynx touchdown. The score moved to 20-13 after the Tucker Nichols extra point with 9:56 left in the third quarter.
Chicago answered up with a touchdown of their own, starting with a complete pass from Cortina to Reynolds for 83 yards with 8:53 left in the third.

The Lynx responded with a touchdown that started with a complete pass from Box to Egan for 13 yards on the University of Chicago 16 yard line. Vieira put the Lynx in a good position to score with a 15 yard rush, putting the Lynx on Chicago's 1 yard line. Vieira then finished the deal himself, rushing 1 yard into the end zone for a touchdown, making the count 27-20 in Rhodes favor after the extra point.

Again the Lynx heard an answer as the Maroons converted a series of pass completions, leading to a pass from Cortina to Thomas for a touchdown. The extra point, however, was blocked by the Lynx, which helped the Lynx retain their lead 27-26.

Rhodes opened the final quarter with possession, which readily led to a touchdown by the Lynx when Box connected with Egan for 19 yards at the 13:44 mark in the fourth quarter. Rhodes widened the gap to a 34-26 lead over the Maroons after the extra point.

After several back and forth possessions, Stanton Brown snagged a defensive interception of Cortina's pass at the 43 yard line with a return of 7 yards, which brought the Lynx to midfield late in the fourth quarter. The Lynx couldn't capitalize on the Maroons turnover and punted away with under six minutes to play.

A huge sack by Spencer Smith staggered the Maroons offense and Chicago was forced to punt. The Lynx saw another blocked punt by Michael Shield, who recovered the ball and returned it 11 yards for a Rhodes touchdown. With the extra point by Nichols, the Lynx extended their lead to 15 with a score of 41-26.

Chicago wasn't done as they used a Rhodes penalty to keep their drive alive. Cortina  found Sam Coleman in the end zone with just under two minutes left in the contest to make if 41-34 after a successful two point conversion.
