Lynx roll with 50-23 win

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Rhodes College Lynx rolled past their rival 50-23 Saturday to win the coveted Edmund Orgill Trophy of the long standing rivalry.

The conference win puts the Lynx at a 5-1 overall, and 2-0 in conference play. The 5-1 start for the Lynx is the best start for a Rhodes team since 1992.

After giving up a 43 yard field goal, the Lynx countered quickly with a 74 yard touchdown run by Senior running back Dane Wilson, and the Lynx would not lose their lead the rest of the game.

The Lynx rushed the ball for 321 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Kevin Vieira led the way for Rhodes, with 18 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns, while Dane Wilson had 80 yards on only three carries, including the long touchdown run. Mitch DeKozan got in the mix with 55 yards on eight carries.

The Lynx had one of their best offensive performances of the year, gaining 560 total yards of offense and putting up a season best 50 points. The 50 point total is also the most points ever scored by either team in the esteemed history of the Edmund Orgill Trophy game.

Quarterback Blake Box had an almost perfect game for Rhodes College, completing 10-13 passes for 239 yards and four touchdowns, both season highs for Box. Box connected three times with tight end Charles Schneider, all three of which were touchdowns, and were Schneider's only three catches of the day. Sophomore Jonathan Wiener led the Lynx Cats in receiving with three catches for 143 yards and a touchdown.

Wiener opened up the second quarter for the Lynx by taking a great pass from Box 73 yards for the score only 40 seconds into the quarter.

The Rhodes College defense played well, giving up just over 300 yards of offense while not allowing a rushing touchdown. Sophomore Linebacker Trey Hooper led Rhodes with 11 total tackles and a forced fumble, and fellow Sophomore Michael Shield had eight tackles, 3 of which were for a loss, along with a sack. Freshman John Dodd played well in the secondary for the Lynx, contributing two pass breakups on the day.

Rhodes College takes home the Orgill Trophy for the second straight year. This rivalry is known as the oldest standing rivalry in the south, a rivalry notable enough to be listed in a Sports Illustrated article last year as one of the oldest college football rivalries in the country.

The Lynx will take a week off to get ready for their conference match up against Centre College, two weeks from now on Homecoming Weekend, October 26th. That game is set to kick off at 2 p.m.
