SEWANEE, Tenn. - Rhodes men's soccer suffered a frustrating defeat against Sewanee, 1-0 on Sunday's SAA conference game.
Â
Â
The loss takes the Lynx to 5-9-2 overall and 0-4-2 in the SAA, while the Tigers move to 7-7-2 on the season and 2-4 in conference.
Â
Rhodes dominated possession in the first half, and were successful in switching the ball quickly and limiting turnovers. The Lynx were created some great chances to score, but were unable to find the back of the net. The two teams went into halftime with the scoreless draw.
Â
The second half was more of the same, with the Lynx connecting well but unable to score. With the score line still 0-0 towards the end of the game, it looked like Rhodes were headed for their fourth straight overtime game, but in the 87th minute, Sewanee scored after a controversial no-call. After what looked like a blatant Sewanee handball, midfielder Griffin Miller slipped the ball past Rhodes'
Riley Sheen. Despite protests from players, coaches, and parents, the referee let the goal stand, making the score 1-0 for the Tigers. The Lynx were unable to score a late equalizer, and recorded their second last-minute loss of the weekend.
Â
"A gut wrenching end to the game today – very disappointed the referee crew wasn't on top of the scramble and missed the apparent hand ball that led to the goal – but in the end, if we had finished one of the earlier chances we created, it might not have come down to this ending. We must keep our heads up and continue to play hard and we have to finish the opportunities we get"
Â
Riley Sheen played all 90 minutes for the Lynx, making four saves.
Â
The Lynx will be back in action at home for their senior game against Hendrix on Saturday, Nov. 2nd at 1 p.m.
