Rhodes women's soccer hammered Oglethorpe University by a score of 10-0 on Saturday's Southern Athletic Association matchup.
The win takes the Lynx to 2-0 in conference play, and 10-3 overall. The Stormy Petrels fell to 0-2 in conference and 5-5-1 on the season.
Rhodes dominated possession in the first half, and a solid defensive performance from the Lynx prevented Oglethorpe from creating scoring opportunities. The Lynx opened the scoring 14 minutes in with a goal from freshman
Kelsey Sweeney, whose towering header found the back of the net from a
Heidi Press corner kick. Rhodes made the score 2-0 at the 25 minute mark after junior
Kelsey Keown volleyed a bouncing ball past the Petrels' goalkeeper. Keown was involved again 4 minutes later when she slipped the ball to
Elise Grisoni, who fired a shot into the right side-netting to make the score 3-0. Grisoni got her second of the day at the 28th minute mark making the score 4-0. In the 29th minute, Rhodes scored its fifth goal when
Elizabeth Wayda was awarded a penalty kick after she was brought down in the box. Keown stepped up and converted the spot kick, her second of the game. With three minutes left on the clock,
Angie Hurlow found Brook Tomlin who finished coolly from the six-yard box, bringing the first half score to 6-0.
The second half was more of the same from Rhodes, who still looked hungry to score. Press dominated the left wing, recording two assists in just two minutes. At the 50 minute mark, her cross found forward
Hannah Selner, who tapped in the seventh goal. Two minutes later, Press assisted Shannon Donnelson's goal, making the score 8-0. 15 minutes into the second half, Oglethorpe's Lexie Craig was ejected from the game after receiving her second yellow card. Down to 10 players, the Petrels focused on keeping defensive shape. Grisoni scored her third goal of the game unassisted after 66 minutes of play then recorded her fourth goal 4 minutes later from a
Nicolette Glidden pass. At the final whistle, the score was 10-0 for the Lynx.
Six different players contributed to the Lynx 10-0 victory, with the team outshooting the Petrels 26-2.
