Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rhodes soccer trips against Oglethorpe, 2-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Rhodes men's soccer fell in a close battle to conference foe Oglethorpe on Friday in Southern Athletic Association Action.

The loss moves the Lynx to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in SAA play when the Petrels advance to 6-2-1 and 2-0 in league play.

" We looked very sluggish today," said head coach Andy Marcink. "It's been a tough week with midterms and the early kick-off time was tough for several of the guys with exams this morning"

The Rhodes defense held strong in the first half, when it looked like the Lynx would take the scoreless count into the half, until Oglethorpe's Carlos Gaston scored off a rebound in the last 20 seconds of the opening half to help the Petrels take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Lynx saw another score just two minutes into the second half when Sean King buried a Nick Muntean pass into the bottom right corner of the goal to make the Rhodes deficit 2-0. Andrew Roskos-Ewoldsen cut down the Petrel lead at the 86th minute when he snuck in a beautiful shot from 25 yards off goal.  Rhodes pushed the rally, but couldn't muster enough to overcome the early trail. The final score would remain 2-1.

"I was pleased with the way we continued to fight," said Marcinko.  "We were able to press at the end to put ourselves in a position to have a last chance at the tying goal as the final whistle blew"

Rhodes' Riley Sheen earned 90 minutes in goal for the Lynx, snagging five saves while in goal.

Rhodes outshot their opponents by a count of 13-9 and also won the battle for corners, 5-2.

The Lynx will be back at home on Sunday Oct. 13 at 12 p.m. when they host Berry College.
