Men win thriller against Birmingham Southern

4/14/2012 5:27:00 PM

Rhodes faced Birmingham Southern on April 14th on the Lynx senior day. The match started with the recognition of the Rhodes tennis seniors.

The Lynx had a slow start to the match and dropped all three doubles points. BSC came out hot in the doubles by serving big and returning well. The guys tried to hang in there but in the end just came up a few points short.

Starting the singles off down 0-3 is not an easy task to do. The guys came out with fire and intensity and started off the singles well. We took the first set on all six courts. Senior Taylor Simmons was the first Lynx to take a point in a quick straight set victory. He was followed by a solid victory by Ryley Erhardt 7-5, 6-3. Kevin Duffy won a tight first set tiebreaker but was able to wear his opponent down in doing so and took the second set handily, final score was 7-6(5), 6-2. Sanders Phelps came up with some of his cleanest tennis of the year and won 7-6(1), 6-3. The match came down to Morgan Slevin and Mason Asbury at #1 and #6 singles. Both players won the first and lost the second. Morgan Slevin played a great third set and won it 6-1. Morgan got the clincher by winning 7-6(4), 6-7(7), 6-1. Mason Asbury had just started the third set and was up 30-15 before he was pulled off because the match was decided.

Rhodes plays Centre this evening and then resumes action April 15th against Hendrix.
