In the second game of the Greg Volgas Memorial, the Rhodes College Men's Soccer team prevailed victorious over Principia College 1-0. The lone goal came in the 79th minute from freshmen midfielder,
Hunter Yocum. Freshmen striker,
Tim Garton, found himself one-on-one in the corner of the 18 yard box. Garton was able to cut the ball back and crossed the ball to the streaking Yocum, who made a tremendous diving header effort to put the ball past Principia keeper, Samuel Thomas. The Lynx held on for the remaining 11 minutes for their first win of the season.
The Lynx defense, anchored by senior captain, Austin Phyrr, sophomore,
Will Cooner, and freshmen Mike Hampl and
Patrick Harris, played exceptionally well, holding Principia to only 4 shots. Senior goalkeeper,
Justin Stradley, kept the opponents at bay, recording his first shutout of the season.
Rhodes College improves to 1-0-1 on the year and will face Webster University at home Sunday, September 5th at 4:00 pm.
