MEMPHIS, TN - The Lynx traveled across the city on Saturday to compete at the University of Memphis Invitational. At the non-scoring meet, the women competed well – with many athletes placing among the top finishers in several events.
Perhaps the most impressive performance of the meet belonged to freshman
Alison Lang (Colts Neck, NJ). Her hammer throw of 120'11” (36.87m) not only was a fifteen foot personal best, but it also broke the school record by over ten feet. Her efforts garnered her ninth place honors against a very strong field of Division I athletes. Lang also placed sixth in the javelin with a toss of 101'00” (30.80m), finishing just behind teammate
Becky Atnip's throw of 103'4” (31.50m). In other field events, senior co-captain
Julia Goss (St. Louis, MO) long jumped a distance of 16'6” (5.03m) to place seventh, followed by freshman Sam Specht (Saint Petersburg, FL) in eighth place with a distance of 16'5” (5.00m). Specht was also third in the triple jump with a distance of 34'4.25” (10.47m).
The running events also saw much success from the Rhodes women. In the 100m dash, freshman
Lindsay Svehla (Bellevue, NE) placed sixth with a time of 12.79 seconds. In the 800m run, junior
Sandy Henin ran a season's best time of 2:19.97. Atnip also ran a season's best in the 800m, crossing the line in 2:28.15. The 1,500m was an excellent race, with all five ladies running personal bests. Senior co-captain
Cybil Covic (Cordova, TN) was first with a time of 4:45.16, followed closely by junior
Kelsey Dudziak (Williamstown, MA) in 4:47.53. Senior
Melissa DeFabrizio (Richmond Hill, Ontario) finished sixth in 5:07.20. The 4x100m relay of Goss, Specht, sophomore
Kyla Graham (St. Louis, MO), and Svehla was fourth amid a very competitive field, clocking in at 49.20 seconds. In the 4x400m relay, the squad of freshman
Hillary Quirk (San Antonio, TX), freshman Maddie Harrigan (Chesterfield, MO), Atnip, and freshman
Jessica Murrer (Bronxville, NY) ran strongly to finish in sixth place.
It was the perfect meet for the Lynx as they now begin preparation for the SCAC Championships to be held next Friday and Saturday, April 23-24 at Hendrix College in Conway, AR.
