GREENCASTLE, IN – It was a successful day for the Women's Track & Field team at the DePauw Indoor Classic, placing 4th out of 11 scoring teams. With only 17.50 points separating the top 5 teams, every athlete's performance was valuable in helping the Lynx beat out the host school by a mere 1.50 points.
Highlights for the day included junior
Molly Buck (Austin, TX) dominating the field in the 600m run. Her time of 1:38.45 was nearly four seconds better than the second place finisher. Senior Kim Tryon (Gulf Breeze, FL) was the other event winner for the Lynx in the pole vault; her clearance of 11'2.5” (3.42m) was 8.5 inches ahead of the runner up, and placing her first in a field of thirteen competitors.
Other notable performances included the 4 x 200m relay team of junior Jesse Ormand (Hammond, LA), sophomore
Kyla Graham (St. Louis, MO), freshman
Lindsay Svehla (Bellevue, NE), and senior
Julia Goss (St. Louis, MO) placing third in a time of 1:51.09. Ormand also placed second in the 55m hurdles in a time of 9.09, fifth in the long jump with a distance of 15'10.5” (4.84m), and fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 33'3.75” (10.15m). Also racking up the points for the Lynx was co-captain Goss whose long jump of 17'4.75” (5.30m) placed her second in the event by a mere .5 inches. Competing in the 200m dash as well, her time of 27.33 was good enough for seventh place in a very closely contested race. Goss' performance in the 4 x 400m relay helped the team of freshman
Megan Lee (Castro Valley, CA), freshman
Jessica Murrer (Bronxville, NY), and freshman Sam Specht (St. Petersburg, FL) placed second with a time of 4:15.68. Specht also placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 32'11.75” (10.05m) and Svehla represented the Lynx in the 55m dash with a fifth place finish in a time of 7.53.
The distance races saw the Rhodes women run very well. Freshman Maddie Harrigan (Chesterfield, MO) ran a 5:27.71 in the 1 mile to place third, sixteen seconds ahead of the fourth place finisher and only missing out on second place by .17 seconds. Sophomore
Caroline Webster (Brunswick, ME) also scored in the race, placing seventh with a time of 6:03.60.
In perhaps the most exciting race of the day, the 3,000m saw ten Rhodes athletes compete in a field of twenty-two en route to placing five athletes among the top ten finishers, with many personal records set along the way. Harrigan had another outstanding race, placing eighth in a time of 11:20.30. Senior teammate
Melissa DeFabrizio (Richmond Hill, Ontario) was sixth in 11:08.90, and junior
Anna Johnson (Homewood, AL) was fourth in 10:49.18. With an extremely strong second half of the race, junior
Kelsey Dudziak (Williamstown, MA) and senior co-captain
Cybil Covic (Cordova, TN) closed the gap on the lead runner by a substantial margin, finishing in very close second and third in excellent times of 10:38.84 and 10:41.11 respectively with Dudziak finishing only 1.78 seconds out of first place.
In all, it was a successful day for the Lynx of Rhodes College. This meet concludes the indoor season, but the outdoor season starts in earnest on March 20
th when the track program hosts over twenty Division I, II, and III schools for the Rhodes Open Meet.
