Lynx Fall to Salisbury in NCAA Tournament

11/15/2010 11:56:30 AM

Rhodes Field Hockey's cinderella season came to a halt on Saturday as the Lynx fell to the defending national champion Salisbury Sea Gulls in sweet sixteen action in Grantham, PA.  After a record breaking season that included their second consecutive SCAC Championship and 16 wins a row, Rhodes got out played by #7 Salisbury and lost the match 7-0.  There were some bright spots for Rhodes, including a 6-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities and several strong presses, and the game was much more competitive than the score indicates.  The Sea Gulls scored early just 3 minutes into play and didn't look back with 4 first half goals and 3 tallies in the second period of play.  Four different Salisbury players found the back on the net with 3 of them scoring two goals each.  Rhodes scored late in the first period but had the goal called back due to danger on the initial hit.  The Lynx fought hard, stayed composed, and never gave up.  The team pressed hard in the second half and had many chances but were unable to get by Salisbury goaltender Anna Cooke.  The NCAA appearance was the first by Rhodes in the program's short 13 year history.  Rhodes' record breaking 17-2 (10-0) season was capped off by their first Top 20 ranking and their 4th SCAC Championship.
