Men's Basketball Opens Season with a Road Victory

Elsah, Illinois ~ The Lynx opened up the 2009-2010 season with a road win over Principia College Panthers on Monday night. The 89-51 Rhodes victory saw the Lynx place four players in double digits and all twelve players score a basket.

Rhodes got off to a quick start scoring an offensive put back by Larry Cunningham (St. Charles, IL) with only ten seconds coming off the clock. Cunningham would score 16 points on the night and grab 4 rebounds. Rhodes never relinquished the lead and jumped on the Panthers 8-0 before giving up a basket. Rhodes' first half lead grew as large as 20 points as the Lynx grabbed 14 offensive rebounds in the first half alone. At halftime the Lynx had a commanding 40-23 lead. Cunningham scored 12 points in the first twenty minutes and seniors Andyshea Saberioon (Houston, TX) and Reid Hamilton (Birmingham, AL) each scored 8 points in the first half. Rhodes grabbed 30 rebounds in the half including those 14 offensive rebounds. The defense was stout as it held Principia to 31% from the field in the first half.

The second half was more of the same for Rhodes, stifling defense and a large rebounding advantage. Rhodes offense was efficient in the half shooting 53% from the field and dominated the boards again, grabbing 28 rebounds including 11 offensive. Hamilton scored 14 of his game high 22 points in the half. Hamilton recorded his first double-double of the season as he also had a game high 10 rebounds. Rhodes had a commanding rebounding advantage on the night, out-rebounding the Panthers 58-31 including 25 offensive rebounds on the night. Andrew Sillyman (Cordova, TN) scored 11 points for the Lynx and Kory Kilpatrick (Athens, GA) scored 10 as the Lynx other two double digit scorers.

Rhodes will be back in action on Friday night against Greenville College as part of the Rhodes College Tipoff Classic by Hampton Inn~Poplar. Tip off for the game is 7pm. The tournament will also have a women's double header at 1 & 3 pm. Westminster and Hendrix will be the other men's game and tipoff at 5pm.
