Game Recap: Rhodes vs. MUW

In a defensive battle that tested patience and precision, the Rhodes College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Mississippi University for Women on September 3 at the Roger Short Soccer Complex in Columbus, Miss. The contest featured relentless offensive pressure from the Lynx, capped off by a late-game breakthrough to secure the win and remain unbeaten on the season.

Freshman Abby Bell provided the game's decisive moment in the 84th minute, scoring her first goal of the season and career off a sharp assist from Grace Culver. Bell's composure in front of goal lifted the Lynx to victory after dominating possession throughout the match.

Culver's play making ability was on full display, as she consistently created opportunities in the attacking third, highlighted by her crucial assist on the game-winner.

Defensively, the Lynx back line limited MUW to just three total shots and one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Olivia Barfield stayed alert when called upon, recording a clean sheet to preserve the shutout, her second of the season.

Rhodes controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, firing 37 total shots while holding MUW to only three. Despite numerous chances, the Lynx were kept off the scoreboard until the closing minutes. The breakthrough came at 83:25, when Culver slipped a well-timed pass to Bell, who finished with precision to give Rhodes the lead. From there, the Lynx defense held firm to lock up the 1-0 result.

With the win, Rhodes improves to 2-0-1 on the season and now turns its attention to Covenant College. The Lynx will face the Scots on Friday, September 5 in Maryville, Tenn., for only the second time in history as they look to extend their unbeaten start and continue building momentum in non-conference play.
