Game Recap: Rhodes vs Dominican vs Elmhurst

This Thursday, September 11th, the Rhodes College Lynx flew to Chicago, IL to take on Dominican University and Elmhurst University. On the following Friday, the Lynx defeated Dominican University in three sets (3-0) and fell to Elmhurst University in three sets (0-3).

Key Performances

Scoring points for the offense, junior Yzzi Dsamou chalked up the most kills (9) against Dominican and Elmhurst (13 kills). Freshman outside Caroline Short also had 9 kills against Dominican, utilizing various shots to get the Lynx a win. 

In the backrow, SAA Defensive Athlete of the Week, junior libero Olivia Wiseman had the most digs (10) in the game against Dominican and against Elmhurst (8). Closely behind in the game against Elmhurst was junior setter Emma Clark with a notable 7 digs. 

Leading the offensive in the game versus Dominican freshman setter Luca Prest had the most assists (15) and against Elmhurst, Emma Clark had the most (11). 

Special shoutout to senior middle Ashlyn Martin who played in both games leading the team in overall blocks (5) and aces (6) for the weekend. 

Game Highlights

To start off the day, the Lynx took on Dominican University battling point-by-point in the first set until the Lynx went on a five point run with kills from Yzzi Dsamou, Maggie Lukemire, and Luca Prest. Later on in the first set, the Lynx went on a notable six point run with aces from Emma Clark and kills from Caroline Short. The Lynx won the first set 25-16. Heading into the second set, both teams were determined to score, leading to the points going back and forth until Dominican pulled out a six point run. However, the Lynx rallied together and went on their own six point run with a kill from Hope Wehrli, a kill from Caroline Short, and an ace from Meg Gebhart. The Lynx continued fighting and won the second set 25-21. Fired up from their two set advantage, the Lynx started the third set with an early nine point run. The Lynx kept this momentum up and won the third set 25-16, securing a win 3-0 against Dominican.

In their second game of the day, the Lynx took on Elmhurst in their home gym. The first set was a thrilling match with points going back and forth the entire set. Notably, Yzzi Dsamou had six kills in the first set to secure her team some points. Though the Lynx fought hard, they lost the first set 25-27. Heading into the second set, Elmhurst started with an early nine point lead. The Lynx continued fighting but fell short 13-25 in the second set. In the third set, Yzzi Dsamou had five kills, helping her team to stay in the running. The Lynx battled but fell to Elmhurst in the third set 17-25, losing the game 0-3.

Game Recap: Rhodes vs North Central

On the second day of the Chicago tournament, the Lynx traveled to Naperville, IL (home of senior Hope Wehrli), to take on North Central College. Though the Lynx fought hard, they fell to North Central in four sets (1-4). 

Key Performances

Helping her team score points, freshman Caroline Short had the most kills with 13. On the outside, senior Yzzi Dsamou had 9 kills and on the right side sophomore Isabella Kventensky had 7 kills. All three players were essential to the Lynx's offense and helped in keeping the Lynx in the game.

Leading the backrow, junior Olivia Wiseman had an outstanding 17 digs. Her ability to read and her outstanding hustle makes her a key player for the Lynx's defense.

Running the offense, junior setter Emma Clark had 16 assists. Her leadership and efficiency on the court is valuable in running the Lynx's offense. 

Game Highlights

At the start of the first set, the Lynx went on two five-point runs with two aces from Meg Gebhart and two aces from Caroline Short. The Lynx fought hard but fell short by two, losing the first set 23-25. Fired up by their loss in the first set, the Lynx came out with early kills from Yzzi Dsamou and Caroline Short. The Lynx kept the momentum throughout the second set, winning off of a kill from Ashlyn Martin, 25-16. In the third set, the Lynx went back and forth with Elmhurst the entire set. Notably, Caroline Short had five kills and Isabella Kventensky had three kills. Though the Lynx fought hard, they fell short by two points 23-25. The fourth set was also a battle with the Lynx trying to get another set and Elmhurst trying to secure a win. Though the Lynx battled, Elmhurst won the fourth set 21-25 resulting in the Lynx losing the game (1-3). 

Up Next: Rhodes vs. Belhaven University

The Lynx return hom to take on Belhaven University on September 20 at 6PM. Last season, the Lynx swept the Blazers making the overall record against them 6-2.
