Men's Lacrosse Defeat Tigers to Become SAA Champions

The Rhodes Lynx capped a perfect SAA season with a dominant 13-8 victory over Sewanee to claim their first SAA Championship since 2019, solidifying their place as an unstoppable force in the conference.

Crain Field in Memphis played host to a thrilling title match, where Rhodes overcame an early barrage from Sewanee to secure their championship dream. The Lynx, led by standout performances from Drew Downes, John Mori, and Wyatt Bounds, displayed resilience and brilliance in all facets of the game.

The first quarter was a shootout, with both teams trading goals in a flurry of offense. Sewanee's Manoli Loupassi shined early, netting three goals and keeping the Tigers in contention. However, Rhodes refused to back down, with Bounds scoring a hat trick in the first 15 minutes, and Mori's late goal tying the score at 6-6 heading into the second quarter.

From there, the Lynx began to pull away. Drew Downes gave Rhodes their first lead of the game in the second quarter, and the Lynx defense, anchored by sophomore goalkeeper Jason Rubinstein, tightened up, holding Sewanee scoreless for much of the second half.

Mori and Gavin Nagle extended the lead in the third, and by the final quarter, Rhodes' relentless attack and suffocating defense left Sewanee scrambling. Downes put the exclamation point on the game with his third goal late in the fourth quarter, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

The Lynx dominated possession, with Rubinstein and the defense thwarting key Sewanee opportunities. Rhodes' ability to capitalize on turnovers and maintain composure under pressure epitomized their undefeated conference season.

With the championship trophy held high and the undefeated streak intact, Rhodes now turns its sights to the NCAA tournament, where they will look to continue their extraordinary season.
