Lynx Split Friday Double Header

Memphis, TN- The Rhodes College Softball team split their doubleheader against Blue Mountain University on Friday, March 7. Winning the first game 4-2, and falling in the second 0-6.

Game 1

The Lynx wasted no time setting the tone, as Talia Travis smashed a two-run home run to right-center in the bottom of the first inning, bringing Savannah Russell across the plate. The early lead energized the team and put Blue Mountain on the back foot from the start.

After Blue Mountain narrowed the gap with a solo homer in the 2nd inning and tied the game in the 4th, Rhodes responded swiftly. In the bottom of the 4th, Hannah Schweiger's RBI single to center brought Talia Travis home, reclaiming the lead. Savannah Russell's RBI single in the 5th sealed the deal, giving the Lynx a crucial insurance run.

The Lynx defense was on point, turning two double plays and holding Blue Mountain to just two runs despite several scoring opportunities.

Gina Dudley was dominant on the mound, pitching a complete game and improving her record to 3-4. She allowed just six hits and two runs (only one earned) over seven innings, showcasing impeccable control and poise. Her ability to work out of tight spots ensured the Lynx maintained their lead throughout.

Game 2

The game started with promise, as Rhodes' starter Addie Nickelson took the mound. However, the 2nd inning proved difficult, with defensive miscues leading to a flurry of unearned runs for Blue Mountain. The decisive blow came when a Topper crushed a three-run homer to left field, giving Blue Mountain a 5-0 lead.

Despite the setback, Rhodes didn't fold. Taylor Petty entered in relief, delivering an outstanding performance. Over 5.1 innings, she kept the Blue Mountain bats quiet, striking out seven and allowing just one unearned run. Her efforts stabilized the game and gave Rhodes a chance to fight back.

Offensively, Rhodes found hope in Athena Gonzales. She stepped up with two sharp singles, proving to be a tough out against Blue Mountain's dominant pitcher. Campbell Smith also provided a spark with a solid base hit, while Talia Travis and others continued to hustle and pressure the defense.

As the innings wore on, Rhodes' defense began to settle, making several key plays to keep Blue Mountain from extending their lead. The Lynx dug deep, refusing to let the score dampen their effort.

As the final out was recorded, the Lynx walked off the field with heads held high, knowing they left it all on the diamond. This may not have been their day, but Rhodes showed they have the talent and fight to rise to future challenges.

The Lynx's record now stands at 5-9. They will be looking to bounce back in their upcoming games on March 22. They will travel to Batesville, Ark. where they'll take on Lyon College in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
