Women's Soccer Shuts Out Brevard to Advance in NCAA Tournament

Game Recap: Rhodes vs. Brevard College

In a controlled and composed postseason performance, the Rhodes College women's soccer team defeated Brevard 2–0 in the First Round of the NCAA Championships on November 15, 2025, at the Woodruff PE Center. The Lynx dictated the tempo from start to finish, showcasing tactical sharpness, disciplined defending, and timely execution in the attacking third to hand Brevard just its second loss of the season.

Key Performances

Ellie Lawrence opened the scoring and led the offensive effort for the Lynx, netting her second goal of the year in the 38th minute off a clean setup from Sophia Rall. Lawrence's finish broke through a disciplined Brevard back line and gave Rhodes key momentum heading into halftime.

In the midfield, Sophia Rall delivered a well-rounded performance—adding an assist, driving possession, and helping control the pace of play. Her poise under pressure was instrumental in maintaining Rhodes' structure.

Off the bench and into the spotlight, Blair Rice added the insurance goal in the 85th minute, calmly slotting home her first of the season off an assist from Maddie Carter, sealing the match for the Lynx.

Defensively, Taylor Theofiledes once again anchored the back line with physicality and composure, limiting Brevard to just three total shots and none in the second half.

Goalkeeper Olivia Barfield finished with two saves—both in the opening half—providing steady, last-line reliability in a game where every early moment mattered.

Game Highlights

Rhodes set the tone early with relentless pressure, generating nine first-half shots and six corner kicks while keeping Brevard pinned in their own half. The breakthrough came at 37:59, when Rall slipped a precise pass through the defense and Lawrence finished cleanly for the 1–0 lead.

The Lynx maintained full control throughout the second half, allowing zero Brevard shots while continuing to generate opportunities. The decisive moment came at 84:21, when Carter found Rice inside the box for the match-clinching strike to make it 2–0.

Rhodes' disciplined defensive structure and overwhelming possession ensured the Lynx never let Brevard find a foothold, securing a commanding NCAA opening-round victory.
