Lynx Drop Close Contest to Majors

On January 12, 2025, the Rhodes Lynx fought hard but ultimately fell short against the Millsaps Majors, 51-42, in a spirited contest at Mallory Gymnasium in Memphis, TN. Despite the loss, Rhodes showcased resilience and some standout performances that look promising for the games ahead.

Key Performers:
  • A'niya Lagarde
Lagarde was a force in the paint, posting a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, including 7 on the defensive end. She also contributed 2 steals and played a key role in keeping Rhodes within striking distance.

  • Taylor Dupree
Dupree displayed impressive efficiency, scoring 12 points on 5-9 shooting while pulling down 6 rebounds and dishing out 2 assists. Her aggressive play was critical in the team's offensive efforts.

  • Giana Vlahakos
Vlahakos grabbed 8 rebounds and added 6 points, anchoring the defensive interior and helping limit Millsaps' second-chance opportunities.

The game started with promise for the Lynx. A'niya Lagarde dominated early, scoring inside and pulling down rebounds as Rhodes took a slim 14-13 lead after the first quarter. Lagarde's presence in the paint set the tone, and the Lynx defense forced Millsaps into tough shots.

The tide began to turn in the second quarter. Rhodes struggled to find their rhythm offensively, missing open looks and going cold from three-point range. At halftime, the Majors led 29-22, but the Lynx were still within striking distance.

The third quarter saw both teams buckle down on defense. Neither side could find consistent offense, with Millsaps managing just 9 points to Rhodes' 8. Taylor Dupree provided a spark for the Lynx with her aggressive drives and mid-range jumpers, but turnovers and missed opportunities continued to haunt the home team.

Entering the final quarter down by 8 points, Rhodes made one last push. Lagarde, who finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Dupree, who tallied 12 points and 6 rebounds, fought to close the gap. However, Millsaps' depth proved to be the difference, as their bench contributed 27 points to secure the win.

Despite their struggles from three-point range (0-11) and the free-throw line (6-11), the Lynx refused to back down. They out rebounded Millsaps 40-37, including 32 defensive boards, and forced 17 turnovers. However, Millsaps capitalized on Rhodes' 21 turnovers, converting them into 14 points and maintaining a slim edge throughout the second half.

As the final buzzer sounded, the Lynx walked off the court with their heads high, knowing they battled against one of the conference's top teams. With a few adjustments—especially in shooting efficiency and ball control—Rhodes looks poised to rebound in their next matchup.

    Team Statistics:
    - 20 points in the paint
