Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Eli Pilcher '25

Women's Soccer go 0-2 against the WashU bears and Depauw tigers, preparing to host the Westminster Blue jays

The Rhodes Women's Soccer team fell to both the #1 Ranked Washington University Bears and the DePauw Tigers this past weekend in their fourth and fifth match of the season on September 14th, 2024. The Bears continue their unbeaten streak giving Rhodes their first loss of the year with a record of 3-1. The Tigers bring their record to an even win and loss ratio and deal rhodes college their second loss of the season. 

Match Recap: Rhodes vs. WashU
The match was a tough defensive battle throughout with each team showcasing great marking, tackling, and some impressive saves. However, after 26 minutes, WashU (6-0-0) finally broke through the Lynx defense with the only goal of the first half.  Rhodes posted 4 shots in the first half and two corner kicks but were unable to break through. The Bears collected two more goals in the second half with the game finishing 3-0 to the Bears. 

Team Statistics:

  • Rhodes College: 5 total shots (2 on goal), 4 saves, 2 corner kicks.

  • WashU: 23 total shots (7 on goal), 2 saves, 12 corner kicks.

Olivia Barfield recorded 4 saves, marking her season high. Esther Lamb and Erin Cliff were the only Lynx to register shots on goal. 

The DePauw University Tigers were able to narrowly escape with a 1-0 home win over the visiting Lynx Sunday afternoon. This takes Rhodes' record to 3-2 and DePauw to a record of 3-3-1.

The match was a tough defensive battle throughout resulting in a very closed game with minimal shots and saves yet a high number of fouls for each team. However, after 17 minutes, DePauw (3-3-1) finally broke through the Lynx defense with the only goal of the match. Rhodes posted 3 shots and 4 corner kicks but were unable to break through. Each team boasted 2 shots on goal. DePauw recorded a staggering 17 fouls against the Lady Lynx only collecting one yellow card, while the Lynx registered 13 fouls collecting one yellow card as well.

Olivia Barfield recorded 1 save, while Mary Gale Godwin and Grace Culver were the only Lynx to register shots on goal.

The Lynx now shift their focus to their upcoming match against the Westminster College Blue Jays on Sunday, September 22nd, 2024, at home in Memphis, TN. The Rhodes College Lynx are ready to be back at home this upcoming Sunday and hopefully continue their perfect home record. The game will be broadcast on the Lynx Network.
