The Lynx Softball team played a total of four games this weekend, finishing with a record of 1-3. However, they got off to a hot start to kick off the weekend against Mississippi University for Women.
Athena Gonzales started the Lynx scoring in the bottom of the 1st as she doubled to drive in
Madison Granberry. Rhodes would add the rest of their runs in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to a
Jasmyn Stanley single driving in
Madison Wehrman, followed by a single from
Harper Allee-Press that would bring
Cam Ferguson across to score. A strong starting performance from the Lynx pitcher
Gina Dudley would be just what the Lynx needed to keep the Owls at bay as Dudley tossed 6.0 innings of 3-hit ball, only allowing 1 run and striking out 5. Rhodes would go on to win game 1 by a score of 4-1.
On Saturday, the Lynx went up against the Kangaroos of Austin College in game 1 of their 2-game set. The game's first runs came in the 2nd inning after
Katie Bejian doubled to pick up an RBI and tie the game at 1-1. Austin College would take the lead in the 3rd, and the Lynx began clawing back. A sacrifice fly from
Savannah Russell in the bottom of the 3rd, followed by singles from
Katie Bejian and
Emily Pertuit, would bring the Lynx within 1, but the Kangaroo offense would prove to be too much to handle. The Lynx would take the loss 7-4 in game 1 against Austin.
Sunday morning brought around the second game against Austin College on a different day, but a similar result. Rhodes scored 1 run in the bottom of the 1st thanks to a sacrifice fly from
Kate Ledlie that drove in
Madison Granberry. The Lynx offense would remain silent the rest of the game until the bottom of the 7th when
Jasmyn Stanley recorded a 2 RBI single, but it would not be enough for the Lynx in their comeback effort. The final from game 2 against Austin would be a 6-3 Rhodes defeat.
The Lynx would then circle back to face Mississippi Unversity for Women for the second time of the weekend. It was a low-scoring affair that saw no runs scored by either team until the bottom of the 6th when an
Emma Caplinger single would plate
Madison Granberry, giving the Lynx a 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter,
Harper Allee-Press would knock a single of her own to bring
Cam Ferguson home and extend the lead to 2. Unfortunately, a pair of clutch doubles from the MUW offense in the top of the 7th would give them the lead, and the Lynx were not able to respond in the bottom half of the inning.
Kate Ledlie had a good day in the circle as she pitched all 7.0 innings for the Lynx and only gave up 2 earned runs. The final from game 2 against MUW would be a 3-2 Lynx loss.
The Lynx will look to bounce back next weekend as they enter conference play at home against Centre College. The weekend will consist of a doubleheader on Saturday and a single contest on Sunday afternoon.
