Lynx Sweep Centre in Conference Opener

The Lynx stayed at home this past weekend to begin conference play in a three-game series against the Centre College Colonels. The weekend consisted of a doubleheader on Saturday and a single contest on Sunday afternoon, and the Lynx came ready to play.

The Rhodes Lynx made a powerful statement in the series' first game. Led by starting pitcher Gina Dudley, who delivered a complete game shutout, the Lynx dominated the Centre College Colonels. Dudley's impressive performance included 4 strikeouts, only 4 hits allowed, and 0 earned runs. The Lynx offense was equally formidable, with Peyton Rohrig, Talia Travis, and Athena Gonzales contributing crucial runs. This strong start set the tone for the rest of the series, with the Lynx securing a 5-0 shutout victory.

Game 2 of the Saturday double header was a much closer affair as the Colonels took an early lead in the top of the 1st, but Katie Ledlie responded in the bottom of the 2nd with an RBI single scoring Talia Travis and tying the game 1-1. Some base running antics from the Lynx would give them the lead in the bottom of the 3rd as Harper Allee-Press stole second, allowing Jasmyn Stanley to cross the plate on a throwing error from the Centre catcher. The next score would come at the top of the 6th, thanks to a solo homer from the Colonels tying the game at 2-2 heading into the final inning. Jasmyn Stanley would get back on the base path in the bottom of the 7th, applying pressure to the Colonel defense, eventually allowing her to capitalize on another defensive miscue for Centre. Stanley's score would be the walk-off run to give Rhodes the game 2 victory by a score of 3-2.

The Lynx brought their brooms to the field on Sunday as they led the series 2-0 heading into the final game. Game 3 would be a high-scoring matchup that saw Centre in the lead for the majority of the game. The Lynx bats woke up in the bottom of the 5th, starting with a sacrifice fly from Quinn Thompson, followed by a Harper Allee-Press single, plating Adrianna Collado to bring the score to a 3-2 Centre lead. Two batters later, Emma Caplinger stroked a double and picked up 2 RBIs to give the Lynx their first lead of the game in the bottom of the 5th. After Centre tied it up 4-4 in the top of the 6th, the Lynx were determined to complete the sweep. The bottom of the 6th saw Rhodes hit double after double, as 3 doubles in the inning from Adrianna Collado, Madison Granberry, and Harper Allee-Press would break the game open, giving the Lynx a 4-run lead heading into the final inning. Emily Pertuit took the ball in the circle at the top of the 7th and tried to keep the Colonels at bay. She would do just that as she recorded all 3 outs that the Lynx needed to secure the game 3 win by a score of 8-4, putting the cap on a successful weekend series.

Rhodes now boasts a conference record of 3-0 as they head into their next action at home against Lyon College in a midweek doubleheader. Games will be played at 12 pm and 2 pm on Wednesday, March 6.
