Los Lynx Blow Out BSC

Sunday, the Rhodes College women's basketball team bounced back from their loss against Millsaps College and beat Birmingham-Southern College.

The Lynx came locked in in the first quarter as they only missed three shots and exploded for 28 points. Catherine Althoff and Avery Marsh led their team in this quarter as they individually had more points than the Panther team. Avery had 11 points on three of four shooting, while Catherine did a little of everything as she had 8 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one block in that quarter alone. The Lynx's defense was perfect, as they committed no shooting fouls and only allowed the Panthers to score six points.

In the second quarter, the Panthers finally woke up and outplayed the Lynx as they outscored them 19-15. The Lynx fell in love with shooting jumpers a little too much, but they had no reason to be worried. If Rhodes had gone scoreless in the second quarter, they would still have a three-point lead on BSC. As the quarter ended, the score at halftime was 43-25.

Third-quarter action began with a three-point bomb from Avery that was beautifully assisted by Giana Vlahakos, a floor general for the Lynx this quarter, as she had three rebounds, two assists, and one block—this quarter displayed another excellent shooting performance for Rhodes as they shot above 50% from the field. On the other hand, BSC struggled as they could only make one field goal out of seventeen attempts. They would have been worse than in the first quarter if they could not get to the line and make six out of six free throws.

The last quarter of the game could have been better for either team scoring-wise; the Lynx were too far ahead, and the Panthers had too many scoring droughts to make this game competitive. The Lynx's record improved to 4-1 as they defeated the Panthers 70-45. Rhodes showed they were the much better team as they dominated BSC with 36 points scored in the paint, 17 points scored off offensive putbacks, and outrebounded them by 16.

Rhodes goes on the road next weekend to face their rivals, the Sewanee Tigers.
