MEMPHIS, Tenn. (April 2, 2023) -- The Rhodes Lynx swept their second weekend opponent, defeating the visiting Southwestern Pirates in dominant 24-11 fashion. Senior
Emma Bradley recorded 11 saves on the day to set the new career-high save mark in Rhodes Women's Lacrosse history with 358 saves.
The Pirates jumped out at the start of the game, pulling in the first draw control and tallying the first goal from a Liana Collins shot. Rhodes was quick to answer and secured the next draw control and offensive possession where
Chloe Parker scored off a pretty give-and-go assist from
Emily Bruner On the next Lynx possession, Bruner found a sharp cutting
Carina Wesker and extended the lead 2-1.
Sophia Horowitz capped off the 3-0 scoring run with a free position goal. Southwestern pulled in the next draw control and after trading offensive possessions, Pirates' Emma Pertuit put one in the cage on a free position shot. The Pirates tied the game on their next offensive possession with Raquel Kurth finding DeAnna Hames for her first goal of the game. It would be all Lynx after that as Rhodes finished the final four minutes of the quarter on a 4-0 scoring run.
Avery Burke tallied a first quarter hat trick and Parker added her second of the morning.
Southwestern was first to strike again in the second quarter as Liana Collins tallied a woman-down fast break goal. Rhodes answered by winning the next three draw controls and scoring the next three goals with Parker and Wesker each adding another and
Caroline Kardian adding her first of the day on a woman-up opportunity. Southwestern's Kurth scored her first goal of the game on a free position look to bring the game within 5 with Rhodes holding a 10-5 advantage. Despite the Pirates' strong draw control game, the Lynx defense held them in check. Bradley recorded 5 second quarter saves and Rhodes forced 7 turnovers while only allowing the Pirates a 42% clearing percentage. Defense led to offense and Rhodes rallied a 5-0 scoring run with
Sierra Anderson scoring one, and Burke and Kardian each adding two. Bruner dished out six first half assists while
Molly Martiner added two. Hames scored twice for Southwestern in the final minute of the half to bring the score to 15-7.
Despite Rhodes' struggles on the draw in the third quarter, the solid defensive play continued to lead to offensive opportunities.
Anna Erskine scored her first goal of the game after a failed Southwestern clear. Kardian scored two more goals in the quarter while Burke added another and
Molly Heidrick scored her first off a crease roll opportunity. Southwestern's Kurth added two additional free position goals and dished out an assist to Pertuit for her second goal.
Rhodes opened up the final quarter with a 10-goal advantage and running clock. Wesker added to the advantage with a free position goal. The Lynx outscored the Pirates 4-1 in the final quarter with Burke, Parker and Wesker all adding one more goal. Hames added another free position goal for the Pirates.
Emma Bradley tallied 11 saves on the day, with the 11th in the final quarter to break the Rhodes Women's Lacrosse save record, previously held by Lauren Lazure at 357.
Avery Burke led scorers with seven goals while
Emily Bruner dished out seven assists.
Carina Wesker and
Chloe Parker each tallied four goals while
Caroline Kardian added five. Sophomore
Molly Heidrick recorded three assists to accompany her sole goal.
Bari Pinkett caused three turnovers and picked up six ground balls along with eight draw controls on the day.
Sophia Horowitz and
Julia Dalessandro also caused three turnovers and picked up two ground balls in strong defensive play for the Lynx.
Rhodes will be back in action on Saturday, April 7 at 11:00 am EST (10:00am CST) when the Lynx travel to play host Oglethorpe University in SAA conference play.
