Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Dominate First Round SAA Game

Rhodes Men's Basketball took down the Millsaps Majors in big fashion on Sunday afternoon in Mallory Gymnasium. The Lynx earned the right to host their first round SAA Tournament game after going 10-4 in conference play during the regular season.

The Lynx dominated the 1st round matchup from the opening tip to the final buzzer. They began the game by going on an 18-2 run in the first 8 min of the game. Their defense smothered the Majors as soon as they would touch the ball. The Majors did not reach double-digit scoring until 7 min lef in the 1st half. Coach Zo has preached defense and teamwork to his squad all season and today, the team was locked in, in a rare way. The Lynx held the Majors to 28.6% shooting in the half and forced 8 turnovers while shooting 56.8% themselves. Hayden Lamey came off the bench as a man with a mission. He led all scorers in the half with 12 points (3-5 from three). Phil Dotson and Jalen Essick were not far behind and added 10 points each in the half. Jefferson Walker and Koki Wiley did a little bit of everything for the Lynx in the half. Walker finished with 2 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal in the half. Wiley, SAA Player of the Year candidate, finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. The Lynx won the key battles in the half in convincing fashion- rebounding (24-17), bench (28-8), and paint (22-8).

The 2nd half was much of the same for the Lynx. Dotson, SAA Newcomer of the year candidate, added to his resume by exploding this half and finished the with a game-high 25 points (10-11 FG). Lamey was the Lynx 2nd leading scorer and finished with 16 points (3-6 from three). The Lynx upperclassman (Walker, Wiley, Essick, and Arness Georgetown II) continued to do the little things for the Lynx and led by example the entire game. Walker, SAA leader in assists, finished with 5 points, 8 assists, and 4 rebounds. Wiley finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Essick finished with 12 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and 4 steals. Georgetown II, plus/minus guru, finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds. The Lynx shot 70.4% from the field in the 2nd half (season-high) and finished the game with 100 points (2nd highest of the season). The key battles in the game continued to be controlled by the Lynx- rebounding (37-30), bench (60-31, and paint (40-20).

The Lynx chose the perfect time to play their most well-rounded game of the season. Coach Zo and his squad look to continue their momentum in the 2nd round of the SAA tournament next Saturday when they take on rival Sewanee in Mt. Berry, GA.
