Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Jayson Njoga '26

Men's Basketball goes 2-0, Moves into Win Column

This Saturday afternoon, the Rhodes College Lynx welcomed the LaGrange Panthers to Mallory Gymnasium and handed the top 100 team their second loss to another team from the SAA conference.

The game started slow for both teams, with neither team having more than 10 points on the board until after the 15-minute mark. Despite turning the ball over 9 times, the Lynx were in control throughout the first half. The Lynx were outrebounding them, had more second-chance points, and forced the Panthers to turnover the ball 7 times. As the first half ended, the Lynx were up 36-27.

In the second half, LaGrange showed a fight and made Rhodes uncomfortable. They face-guarded the Lynx's leading scorer, Phil Dotson, and double-teamed him whenever he came off a ball screen. This and the turnovers they were still forcing helped the Panthers finally take the lead with 6:25 left on the clock. Unfortunately, the Panther's comeback was not the only adversity the Lynx faced. Phil Dotson had to keep coming out of the game because of cramps and ended up not finishing the game. This didn't stop the Lynx as they went back and forth with the Panthers. Three key things happened in the game's last five minutes that helped Rhodes be the victor. The two offensive rebounds gathered by Cass Ramberg and Shawn Jones Jr. off missed free throws and the team defense led LaGrange to not score a single point in the last 1:50 of the game.

The final score was 75-69, with the two leading scorers being Phil Dotson with 19 and Zavien Williams with 20.

On Monday, the Rhodes Men's basketball team faced their SAA rival, the Sewanee Tigers, at home. The Lynx were coming off one of their most notable wins in years and looking to increase their winning streak to four games.

This game displayed the Lynx's unselfish, explosive offensive capabilities. In the first half, Rhodes scored 45 points to Sewanee's 34 points. They had 10 assists, only 5 turnovers, and shot 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from three. This would have been impressive if they didn't absolutely one-up this performance in the second half.

In the second half, Rhodes scored 45 points again, but on 50 percent from the field and 71 percent from three. Also, they had 12 assists in this half on 6 turnovers. The Lynx ended the game, outrebounding the Tigers by 10 and their defense made the Tigers shoot 40 percent from the field and 18 percent from three. The Rhodes showed that they were a much better team offensively and defensively by leading the whole game. The final score was 90-79, with Rhodes being the victor and having four players in double digits for scoring. Phil Dotson and Arness Georgetown were the leading scorers with 18, Zavien contributed with 16, and Jack Dempsey netted 13.

Even though this win doesn't count towards their record in conference, Rhodes is in the winning column heading into Christmas Break. Their next game will be in Las Vegas against Whittier College on Thursday, December 28.
