Sunday afternoon in the Mallory Gymnasium the Rhodes Lynx men's basketball played against their hardest opponent of the season Wash-U Bears. The Lynx are coming off a two-game winning streak with both wins being blowouts while the Bears are coming off a blowout loss.
Rhodes came out slow offensively, throwing two quick turnovers that ignited Wash-U to go on a 7-0 run. After a few minutes of play and a three from freshman guard
Trevor Lombard that Lynx started to wake up. However, the first half was controlled by the Bears. Their barrage of threes and points off turnovers negated any run the Lynx would go on. The Lynx found themselves down 33-45 by the end of the half.
The second half was a battle with Rhodes going toe to toe with Wash-U and there were even some stretches in the game where Rhodes looked like the better team. Their man-to-man defense made Wash-U work for every bucket they got. Twice in this half the Lynx held the Bears scoreless for three minutes. This tenacious defense along with the 41 points they scored in the half is what made this game into a dog fight. However, Wash-U outlasted Rhodes and defeated them 78-74.
Phil Dotson was the leading scorer with 25 points and 5 assists.
The loss makes Rhodes' record 2-4, but it is also serves as a warning to future opponents especially those in their conference. The Lynx are realizing their potential and this young team haven't even scratched the surface yet.
