Lynx Fall in Heartbreaker Against Kenyon

Kenyon defeated Rhodes 15-14 on Sunday afternoon

GAMBIER, Ohio (May 15, 2022) - The Rhodes women's lacrosse season has come to an end following a loss to the Kenyon Ladies, 15-14, on Sunday afternoon. The Lynx wrap up their 2022 campaign with a record of 15-4.

This game had a completely different feel compared to the Lynx' round one opponent, Aurora, who they defeated on Saturday. The scoring began early in the first quarter when the Ladies scored a pair of goals to take an early 2-0 lead. Payton Bennett would put the Lynx on the board moments after Kenyon's second goal, cutting the lead in half. After Ella Murphy scored again for the Ladies, Bennett once again responded with a goal of her own. She was then joined in the box score by Baylee Barker who netted a pair of goals just 24 seconds apart to give Rhodes a 4-3 lead. Both team would score two more times before the end of the period, with Barker adding her third and fourth goals of the day to give Rhodes the 6-5 advantage after one.

Rhodes controlled the second period as well, outscoring the Ladies 5-3. Avery Burke was the first on the board in the quarter. A few minutes later, Emma Hutchison added one for Kenyon to keep it close. From there, Rhodes scored three straight thanks to Burke for a second time and two more goals from Barker. Trailing 10-6, Caroline O'Neal put two in the net to cut the lead in half with a few minutes before half. The final goal of the quarter came from Bennett who put one past the Ladies' keeper with four minutes to go to make the half time score of 11-8.

Kenyon came out inspired for the third quarter, turning up both their offensive and defensive levels. They scored four unanswered goals before Rhodes was able to find the net for the first time with a Bennett strike near the two-minute mark of the quarter, which tied the game. That was followed by yet another goal from Barker with only 100 seconds remaining to give Rhodes a slim 13-12 lead heading into the final frame.

It was an absolute defensive showcase in the last period as both teams played tough and kept scoring at a premium. Kenyon scored twice in the third minute of the fourth giving them the lead, allowing them to focus on their defense. Nola Garand was fantastic in goal for the Ladies, stopping five shots in the final frame. After Blythe Karras added another goal for Kenyon, the Ladies were up 15-13. Rhodes frantically tried to come back, but Garand was responsible for a number of huge stops. The Lynx finally scored with 2:21 to go on a free position attempt from Barker to pull within one. After a timeout, Kenyon ran their full 90 second shot clock, giving Rhodes just one more try to tie the game. Avery Burke collected a beautiful mid-field pass from goalie Emma Bradley, and was able to make it into the crease for one final shot as time expired, but the shot was stopped by Garand, ending the game at 15-14.

Barker led the offense with eight goals, followed by five from Bennett and three from Burke. Her performance put Barker over 300 career points for the Lynx. The Kenyon defense was stifling all game long, and limited NCAA assist leader Emily Bruner to only one helper. Emma Bradley was credited with 14 saves in goal for the Lynx.
